Monday Essentials: Victory Day, Liberty Tree Dedication and More

Today is Monday, Aug. 12, 2013 and here are five things to know about the week ahead.

Victory Day: Monday, Aug. 12, 2013 marks Victory Day (or VJ Day), which means that state and municipal offices are closed today, including here in Coventry. Remember, trash collection will be delayed on day for the week. Click here for more VJ Day closing info.

Peak Stargazing Night: The Perseid meteor shower is already underway and will continue through Aug. 24, but the peak viewing will be tonight, Aug. 12, when stargazers may see upward of 60 meteorites flash before them per hour. Click here to learn more.

Girls Softball Golf Tourney: The Coventry Girls Softball League will hold its Annual Golf Tournament on Aug. 24 at Wood River Golf Course (78 Woodville Alton Rd., Hope Valley). Format will be Shotgun/Scramble Play. Entry fee is $100 per player or $400 per team and includes green dee, cart, appetizer hour, dinner, t-shirt and prizes. (Tickets for appetizer hour and dinner only are available for $30 per person). This is an adult only event. Liberty Tree Ceremony: On Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Western RI Historical Society will hold a Liberty Tree dedication ceremony to honor the first symbol of the American Revolution. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Nathanael Greene Homestead, located at 50 Taft St. in Coventry. Click here to check out last year's ceremony. 

Animals at CPL: This Thursday, Aug, 15 at 11 a.m., the Coventry Public Library will his a special event for children ages 3-12, presented by Animal World Experience. As part of the Library's "Dig Into Reading" summer program, the event will allow kids to learn about critters that dig, and have an opportunity to pet a variety of interesting animals. No registration required.
