As a result of continued deterioration of the Arkwright Bridge, its vehicular load capacity is now less than three tons. The RI Department of Transportation has ordered the bridge closed to all traffic in accordance with Federal law effective Friday, September 30, 2011.
Previously, the 123-year-old span carried a five ton weight limit.
Detour routes will be the Jackson Flat Bridge in Hope and The Lincoln Ave. bridge in Coventry.
