Primary Brings Changes to Polls

Voters should be prepared for Voter ID, new polling places and new closing time when going to vote Tuesday.

  Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding voters to be prepared for changes at the polls when voting in this Tuesday’s presidential primary. Under the state’s new Voter ID law, poll workers will ask voters for ID for the first time. A wide range of common IDs including a R.I. driver's license, RIPTA bus pass, college ID and Social Security card will be accepted. No eligible voter will be denied the right to vote. Voters who do not bring an acceptable ID to the polls can vote using a standard Provisional Ballot. If the signature they give at their polling place matches the signature on their voter registration, their ballot will be counted. There will only be 135 polling places open statewide, compared to 500 for the last statewide …

Coventry Residents Intending to Run for Delegate to Democratic or Republican National Conventions Must File Wednesday or Thursday

Voters will elect delegates during April 24 presidential primary.

  Rhode Islanders who want to be a delegate at this summer's Democratic or Republican presidential conventions can begin officially filing today, Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis announced on Tuesday. Candidates for delegate must file official “Declaration of Candidacy” and "Pledge of Support" forms with the Secretary of State’s office on Feb. 22 or 23. They then have until Feb. 28 to collect the signatures of at least 150 eligible voters in order to qualify to appear on the ballot for the April 24 presidential primary. The West Bay League stresses how important it is for women to exercise their rights.

To the editor, Independence Day is always a proud day for Americans, but July 4 marks yet another milestone in our democracy - - the anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). FOIA is a federal law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 to address the people's "right to know."    Our right to know is, in fact, even more basic than our right to vote. FOIA established our right to access government records and to know what our government is doing – both its successes and failures.  Exercising our right to know gives us – the public – power.
