As part of ongoing efforts to encourage children, families and individuals to enjoy the recreational resources and outdoor activities our state parks have to offer and engage in more physical activity, the RI Department of Environmental Management will hold a series of free activities during February school vacation. "We've planned an exciting lineup of events for children and families during school vacation week," noted DEM Director Janet Coit. "I hope Rhode Islanders will come out and watch the seals in Narragansett Bay at the Chafee Nature Preserve, explore beaver dams and hike the trails in Pulaski Park, and tour DEM's Lafayette Fish Hatchery. These are great opportunities for children to learn about the natural world and participate…

Town will now request final RI DEM authorization to begin landfill remediation project.
During the Jan. 28 meeting of the Coventry Town Council, a presentation was made by Attorney Richard Sherman and Alliance Environment Consultant Richard Hittinger with regards to the remediation and closure of the inactive Coventry Landfill located on Arnold Road. The presentation was a follow-up to a Dec. 10, 2012 landfill discussion and described in detail what is known as the Beneficial Use Determination (BUD) program. The program involves asking the RI Dept. of Environmental Management (DEM) to approve the use of slightly contaminated materials to reshape the landfill as part of the remediation process. Examples of such materials include urban fill from construction/excavation projects, catch basin cleanings, street sweepings and …

The Department of Environmental Management and State Department of Health are cautioning residents following a North Kingstown raccoon bite incident Monday night.
A North Kingstown resident is being treated for rabies exposure and two dogs have been quarantined following in incident with a possibly rabid raccoon Monday night, causing DEM's vet to caution all Rhode Island residents to stay alert. According to the State Department of Health and Department of Environmental Management, the attack was unprovoked and happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday on Heritage Road in North Kingstown. The vaccination status of the dogs is currently being evaluated. The animal eluded authorities' attempts to capture it and remains at large. DEM and the health department are warning that the raccoon is presumed to be infected with rabies as the animal's behavior is not typical for raccoons. Residents are urged to contact…

Three local bodies of water will be impacted by the cleanups.
The Town of Coventry has been advised by the State department of Environmental Management (DEM) that a long awaited environmental cleanup of the bottoms of several bodies of water will begin the week of Nov. 26, 2012. The cleanups will take place in the areas of Lake Tiogue, Little Lake Tiogue and Little Lake George. While the work is being done, water levels will be lowered further and work crews will be in the area. A recent release from Town Manager Tom Hoover's officer suggests that residents and businesses bordering these water bodies take advantage of the lower water levels by performing work that would not otherwise be possible when the levels are up.

The following is from a press release courtesy of DEM: The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is cautioning dog owners about the re-emergence of a dog disease that is now considered rare in Rhode Island. Canine distemper was recently diagnosed in a raccoon on Prudence Island. The raccoon was submitted for testing after island residents notified DEM about numerous raccoon deaths and a large number of raccoons that displayed abnormal behavior. DEM and the Department of Health worked with local authorities to first rule out rabies as a possible cause. When rabies was not confirmed, DEM authorized testing for canine distemper virus, which was confirmed. Canine distemper does not affect humans. It is a virus that usually affects …

Release courtesy of RIDEM. Through a cooperative effort with the USDA and Animal Plant Health Inspection Services, the Department of Environmental Management will conduct tree surveys in state parks and management areas this month for the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). ALB is an invasive insect that came to the United States in wooden shipping crates from China and Korea more than 16 years ago. It affects hardwood shade trees such as maple, ash, birch, willow and elm by boring into the core of the tree and eventually killing it. This beetle has the potential of wiping out thousands of the state’s trees if it goes undetected. The ALB surveys will take place on Tuesday, August 7 at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown; Thursday, August 9…
A Taxpayer
8:18 am on Thursday, January 31, 2013
So taxpayers are on the hook for $3.9 million ( 60% of $6.5million)? Might as well double that because we all know how well the Gov't does with estimates. Maybe taxpayers should ask Hoover to live in a shack on the "slightly contaminated materials" as part of this proposal to give everyone cancer.   more ›
