Morgan Greets Bangladeshi Award Winner

Rep. Patricia Morgan recently met Bangladeshi businesswoman Selima Ahmad in Washington.

State Representative Patricia Morgan (shown left) greets Jeanne Kirkpatrick Award winner Selima Ahmad of Bangladesh at the International Women’s Day Conference in Washington last month. Ahmad was recently recognized by the Women’s Democracy Network (WDN) for her advocacy of micro-finance to fund women in business. Representative Morgan, who represents parts of Coventry, West Warwick and Warwick in the RI General Assembly, was the only invited guest from the New England states. She has been involved with the WDN for a number of years, and has worked on its behalf to Ukraine, Moldova, Jordan and Turkey to advance the role of women in politics and government.

Rep. Morgan: Fire District's Unionists Vs. Democracy

State Representative Patricia Morgan discusses how union actions may possibly lead to increased tax bills for RI residents.

The following is a letter by Rep. Patricia Morgan (R-Coventry, Warwick, West Warwick) posted Friday on the Central Coventry Citizens Taskforce for Fire Protection website: "Fire taxes are going to become a larger and larger part of many Rhode Islanders’ tax bills if union leaders have their way. And it’s a story that starts in Coventry. What started out seven months ago as a struggle by Coventry residents to prevent a 60 percent jump in their fire-district tax rate has morphed into a fight by the union to gain unfettered and permanent access to their pockets.    With 43 fire districts in the state, this has implications for many Rhode Island households. Rhode Island fire districts are independent of the towns where they are situated and …

Morgan Medicaid Fraud Bill Gets Support In House Committee

$2 million has been earmarked for electronic data-mining to fight fraud.

State Representative Patricia Morgan (R-Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick) recently expressed her pleasure with the positive reception for Medicaid fraud legislation from the House Finance Committee. Morgan’s bill (H-5748) would direct the state to utilize state-of-the-art ‘data mining’ techniques to identify fraud in several key assistance programs including Medicaid, Rite Care and RIte Share. Collectively,Rhode Island spends some $2.3 billion on these low-income assistance programs. In a letter to the committee last week, Secretary of Health & Human Services Stephen M. Constantino registered his “strong support” for H-5748 and several other related bills strengthening efforts minimizing waste, fraud and abuse. “It is difficult to measure…

Court Asked to Release CCFD Documents

Operating and financial data for the fire district is being sought by citizen taskforce.

STATE HOUSE, APR. 15 – In a brief filed with Kent Country Superior Court, State Representative Patricia Morgan (R-Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick) has asked for the release of past financial and operating data for the Central Coventry Fire District. Morgan’s request was filed on behalf of the Central Coventry Citizens Taskforce for Fire Protection, the group organized to review options for fire and emergency services in central Coventry. “All of the attention on the Central Coventry Fire District has been on keeping the CCFD open, and keeping it operating on the same unsuccessful basis it has been,” said Morgan. “The focus of this taskforce is on identifying options for the future, and ways fire protection and emergency services can be …

Coventry Spending That Increases Fire District Deficit Is Irresponsible, Says Morgan

Rep. Morgan believes that uncollected fire district taxes could fund fire and emergency operations for months.

STATE HOUSE, APR 9 – A proposal to spend $300,000 to keep the failed Central Coventry Fire District operating for a few more weeks is “absolutely irresponsible” says State Rep. Patricia Morgan (R-Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick). The Coventry Town Council will be asked tonight to “loan” the soon-in-liquidation Central Coventry Fire District $300,000 to maintain operations for a few weeks, until some other solution is found to provide residents with fire and emergency services on a permanent basis. The Court overseeing the liquidation of the Fire District must approve such a plan, however. “We have offers in hand from well-established private ambulance companies that tell us we can base two fully-staffed ambulances in Coventry, 24/7, for…

Legislation to Ensure Coventry Fire, Emergency Services Filed in General Assembly

The bill would empower the Coventry Town Council to collect fire tax and spend funds for fire and EMT services in Central Coventry.

STATE HOUSE, APR. 4 – A bill to ensure fire and emergency services in Central Coventry was introduced today by State Representative Patricia Morgan (R-Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick). Under the bill’s provisions, fire and emergency services formerly provided by the failed Central Coventry Fire District would be contracted for by the Coventry Town Council on a temporary basis, with such authority expiring on Sept 1, 2013. To pay for such services, the town council would be authorized to collect the balance due on fire district tax bills mailed to residents as ordered by Kent County Superior Court. If the General Assembly approves the measure, the bill asks the Board of Canvassers in Coventry to schedule a vote on the proposal on or …

Morgan to Present Alternative Emergency Service Plan

Morgan hopes to share her findings during Friday's hearing beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Kent County Superior Court.

Representative Patricia Morgan filed a motion with Superior Court Judge Brian Stern Thursday evening requesting authorization to present an alternative emergency service plan for Central Coventry residents during Friday's hearing at Kent County Courthouse. "The plan discussed earlier involving mutual aid was one that I considered temporary - one that would take care of the safety needs of the people while the fire district is reorganizing," she said on Thursday night. Morgan explained that after doing some Internet research, she decided to contact a Connecticut-based private ambulance service with 200 employees, some Coventry residents, who provide emergency services to many towns in Eastern CT as well as Foxwoods Casino. After she …

Superior Court Judge Denies Release of Coventry Emergency Service Contingency Plan

Judge Brian Stern concluded that the plan submitted by neighboring fire districts is not relevant to Tuesday's budget vote.

Despite requests from lawmakers, Superior Court Judge Brian Stern on Monday declined to release details of an emergency service contingency plan developed by the chiefs of surrounding Coventry fire districts.  Representative Patricia Morgan and Senator Nick Kettle filed an emergency motion with the court on Friday requesting that the plan be immediately released for public viewing in preparation for Tuesday's special budget meeting and vote. During Monday's hearing at the Kent County Courthouse, Judge Stern addressed several points in Morgan and Kettle's motion that he felt were inaccurate. He stressed that the contingency plan was never submitted or released to Special Master Richard Land, but only to the court on Mar. 18 for an In …

Firefighters Respond to Reps. Morgan, Kettle's CCFD Budget Flyer

Central Coventry Fire Fighters respond to a flyer released by Rep. Patricia Morgan over the weekend, that they have deemed "inaccurate and irresponsible".

Central Coventry Fire Fighters Local 3372 responded today to State Rep. Patricia Morgan and State Sen. Nicholas Kettle’s flyer attacking the district’s budget and proposed tax increase, saying they issued it without regard to facts or fairness. “Rep. Morgan is doing a disservice to the voters of Coventry, a town she doesn’t even reside in,” said Dave Gorman, president of Coventry Professional Fire Fighters Local 3372. “Apparently, because she doesn’t have to worry about fire protection herself, she thinks it’s appropriate to throw political bombs and misinformation at voters who haven’t yet had an opportunity to hear all the information for themselves. “Rep. Morgan’s flyer against the district is a long list of lies: from her claim that …

Your clueless concerned taxpayer. It most definitely was the tax assessor's error for the over assessment of The Center of New England by $850,000.00. Make an appointment with her and hear it first hand. Dave Gorman had absolutely nothing to do with the error. Unfortunately, the board in Central Coventry did not pick it up but an outside unbiased accounting firm did. Find out the facts before you…   more ›
