Encouraging young children to enjoy reading at an early age is one of the most important ways of laying the groundwork for a well-rounded educational experience. With that in mind, Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D-Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich) joined volunteers from across the state to participate in the National Education Association’s (NEA) “Read Across America” initiative, which aims to motivate children of all ages to pursue adventures through the written word. The Rhode Island chapter of the NEA celebrated the day with guest readers at the Warwick Mall, where any child could come hear a story, grab stickers, take home books, pose with Cat in the Hat and win a wide assortment of prizes at no cost. “I think it was just a fun day for …

Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D—Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich) had the honor of escorting 13 Italian exchange students and their host students for a tour of the State House as part of Exeter-West Greenwich High School’s first-ever exchange program through the Tuscan American Association (TAA). EWG art teachers Nicole Pichette and Elizabeth Lind coordinated with the TAA – a nonprofit that aims to strengthen economic and cultural ties between the United States andTuscany, Italy – to create an engaging exchange program experience for a small group of students. For two weeks this fall, the exchange students immersed themselves in American culture and the English language. “You can’t put a price on such a wonderful program,” Representative …

Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D-Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich) has submitted a letter to Barth E. Bracy, executive director of Rhode Island Right To Life (RIRTL), in support of the organization’s lawsuit against the governor for the creation of the Rhode Island Health Benefits Exchange through executive order last year. “I just want to be on record saying I support this lawsuit, not because of my opinion of the federal health care law, but because I believe the governor may have gone outside his scope of power when he issued that executive order. This is a constitutional issue, not a health care issue,” the representative said. In her letter to the RIRTL executive director, Representative Tomasso noted: “After reading through the complaint…

In a time when the state of the national and local economies has been constantly scrutinized, explored and reinvented, the Joint Committee on Economic Development in Rhode Island recently offered some perspective on one aspect of the economy with a strong impact in the state: exports. Last week’s meeting was more than enlightening for at least one lawmaker, Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D-Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich), who wants the state to focus more on expanding its exports and State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) practices. “Rhode Island’s exports have increased by 53 percent in the last two years,” said Representative Tomasso, a member of the committee. “This is something we need to pay attention to. Exports are essential to …

Rep. Maria Cimini has introduced legislation aimed at bringing Rhode Island in line with 22 other states that provide Medicaid coverage for family planning to low-income women who would qualify for Medicaid if pregnant. The legislation is aimed at helping low-income Rhode Islanders plan their families responsibly and prevent unintended pregnancies that are costly both to those families and to taxpayers. “Being able to plan pregnancy has a positive effect on the health and economic well-being of women and their families. For a low-income woman, an unintended pregnancy can be an enormous setback that limits her ability to get and keep a job, not just when she is pregnant, but for years unless she is able to afford child care,” said …

Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D-Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich) said she is committed to championing support for bills that will continue providing relief for both the taxpayers and individual municipalities. “Between the pension overhaul and the passing of the budget, I have stood in support of anything that would assist the cities and towns in this time of economic stress,” Representative Tomasso said. “It is imperative that we keep our eye on individual cities and towns and keep in mind that our decisions must not only help the state as a whole, but provide assistance to communities that are currently fighting to stay afloat.” Her support for pension reform, she says, saved the taxpayers of each community millions of dollars when looking …
