According to a Wednesday afternoon release from National Grid, the company is ready to respond to any power outages that may occur as a result of the high winds, heavy rain, and even some heavy wet snow from a nor’easter that will affect Massachusetts and Rhode Island today and overnight tonight. More than 500 National Grid and supplemental line and tree crews are available and ready to respond quickly to any storm-related outages, along with more than 200 “wires-down” personnel. As customers across New England hunker down for what is forecasted to be an extremely windy day, National Grid crews and support personnel are prepping in the event strong winds cause damage to the region’s electrical network. A scam indicating that the federal government will pay for utility bills in exchange for personal information has come to New England and National Grid is urging customers to remain vigilant.
National Grid is asking customers to beware alert for a scam stating utility bills will be paid by the federal government or President Obama after sending a social security number and bank routing information. The scam has impacted utility customers in Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina and other parts of the country along with New England,and should not be confused with legitimate low-income utility assistance programs in the Commonwealth. Almost 14,000 customers were without power while two substations were down in Rhode Island.
Update, Monday 1:45 p.m. – According to the National Grid, the two substations that were knocked out this morning are now back up and running. With the substations back online, power has been restored to thousands of customers throughout the state. At the height of the power outage, nearly 14,000 households were without power. A Massachusetts legislator wants customers to get paid when they don't have power.
A Massachusetts legislator is urging passage of a new law that would force utility companies to rebate customers when there are extended outages. State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk, MA) has asked the Massachusetts House Rules Committee to take action on a power outage rebate bill. According to a release from Winslow's office reported on Wrentham Patch, the bill would require rebates to customers who go without power for more than eight hours. The rebate would be for two days of their average bill for each day the customer is without power. Grid website lists today as earliest time for some restorations, but others could be in the dark until Monday.
National Grid has begun posting estimated times for the restoration (ETR) of electrical service for customers throughout the state, including Coventry. But not all news is good news, as some wait times in our area extend until early next week according to their website. In Coventry 46.9 percent of National Grid Customers are still without power, but late last night National Grid announced they had restored over 700,000 customers. Restoration in Coventry began Tuesday and will be mostly completed by Sunday, with the remaining customers restored by midnight Monday according to National Grid.
