Parole Board Reviews Killer's Release, Lawmaker Proposes 30 Year Minimum For Murder

Alfred Brissette, convicted of 1999 thrill killing of Jeanette Descoteaux, may be paroled 22 years early.

Alfred Brissette, convicted of killing Jeanette Descoteaux, might not be released 22 years early after all, according to WPRI.com, and one lawmaker wants a 30-year minimum sentence for murderers going forward.  Brissette, previously scheduled for parole after serving just 13 years of a 35-year sentence for the 1999 murder of the Woonsocket woman he and another man committed for the thrill, was scheduled to be released from prison this year. But WPRI.com and Boston.com report the parole board is reviewing the decision. Boston.com reports part of Brissette’s release plan fell through, according to a parole board official. WPRI.com reports the board will review the case Dec. 17. Meanwhile, Lou Raptakis, newly elected senator for Coventry's …

Raptakis and Denice to Offer Elderly Fire Tax Freeze

Candidates for State Senate and Representative offer proposal to protect Central Coventry Fire District ratepayers and ease concerns about major fire tax hike.

District 33 State Senate candidate Lou Raptakis and District 26 State Representative candidate Nick Denice announced today that they will offer a resolution to the Central Coventry Fire District annual taxpayers meeting on Oct. 1 to limit the impact of any potential increase in the district’s fire tax. In the run-up to the meeting of the Fire District board, a citizens group and district officials have been trading barbs about spending by the Fire District and the scope of a potential fire tax increase. Raptakis and Denice are proposing a resolution that would ask the board to support legislation they would introduce in the General Assembly if elected that would freeze the fire tax for elderly residents and adopt a 4.25% tax cap for the …

Raptakis Wins Endorsement of East Greenwich Democratic Town Committee

The Committee has named Raptakis as its choice in the State Senate District 33 Race.

State Senate candidate Lou Raptakis, who previously served in the State Senate representing a portion of East Greenwich, has won the endorsement of the East Greenwich Democratic Town Committee. The East Greenwich Democrats voted to give him the endorsement at a meeting on Tuesday night. “Lou has always been a great advocate for East Greenwich and he promises to once again be an effective voice for us in the General Assembly,” said Tom Plunkett, chair of the East Greenwich Democratic Town Committee.  “At a time with so many challenges facing our state, we believe Lou will once again work to protect the interests of our communities and strive to promote job growth and meaningful economic development.” Raptakis added, “I’ve been proud to …

Well the "watchdog" must have been asleep on the porch when this he cast this vote in the affirmative: http://www.rhodeislandvotes.org/RollCall.aspx?ID=501853 This was the legislation that enabled the 38 Studios deal, ultimately putting the taxpayers of Rhode Island on the hook for over $100 million in payments to bondholders when the …   more ›

Raptakis Echos Concerns Raised by Citizens Group Regarding CCFD Deficit

While CCFD officials refute deficit concerns, State Senate candidate Gorman sends out campaign brochure hiding his connection to the district

While Central Coventry Fire District officials are refuting concerns raised by a local citizens advocate about a million dollar plus budget deficit, candidate for State Senate Lou Raptakis is pointing out that Dave Gorman, the Union President for the district who is running against Raptakis in the Democratic primary, is hiding his connection to the district in his campaign brochure. Raptakis said Gorman’s campaign literature is touting his experience as “a Fire Department Captain in the Town of Coventry”, but nowhere is the Central Coventry Fire District mentioned.  Raptakis said this is an indication that Gorman is afraid voters will connect him with the rate hikes they have been hit with by the district over the last few years. “Dave …

Raptakis: Response to Dave Gorman

Submitted by the Committee to Elect Lou Raptakis

The following was submitted in response to Gorman Responds to Raptakis Tax Release: This is not simply a matter of a one-time mistake by an accountant. This was a decision to pay a portion of a 2008 tax bill and then to pay no taxes at all in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. That is the record of non-payment by Mr. Gorman's company and it is a record that speaks for itself. To suggest it was some sort of one-time mistake that is the subject of ongoing legal dispute is simply ridiculous.   Furthermore, I'm pleased to hear Mr. Gorman has stepped down as Union President. Given the speed with which he responded to my press release today, I'm surprised this is the first time anyone has heard of this decision and that he chose not to make that …

I have a few unanswered questions for Mr. Gorman: If elected will the taxpayers of the fire district have to pay the additional wages for Mr. Gorman's replacement in his absence? There is no way he will be able to use sick time of vacation time for that seat. How much is it going to cost the taxpayers in additional overtime salary if Gorman wins? . Is it in the contract that we must pay him while…   more ›

Gorman Campaign Responds to Raptakis' Hypocrisy

Raptakis’ 66 late penalty payments total $5,845.87.

The following was submitted in response to Raptakis - Response to Dave Gorman: (Coventry, 7/26/12) The Gorman for Senate campaign issued the following statement today after State Senate candidate Leonidas Raptakis personally attacked Gorman in a recent press release. “Dave Gorman is proud of his public service and proud to be a small business owner. Just like hundreds of other small business owners, Dave has found himself in a disagreement with a government agency over a tax assessment. There is a process by which these issues are reviewed, and Dave respects that process. Once the matter is amicably settled, the company will make all appropriate payments,” said Gorman campaign manager Bill Hall. “At a time when people are hurting and …

Gorman Responds to Raptakis Tax Release

According to Gorman who is running against Raptakis for the District 33 Senate seat, an accounting mistake is behind the large amount of back taxes that he is said to owe to the Town of Coventry.

In response to the statement released by the Committee to Re-Elect Lou Raptakis in regards to unpaid back taxes by his opponent's landscaping company, Dave Gorman admits that a mistake was made in an annual tax report several years ago that has never been corrected. As of July 23, the tax bill for D. Gorman Landscaping shows a balance of $9,640.65 in back tangible property taxes and penalties to the Town of Coventry - an amount that Gorman said is inaccurate. "I don't dispute the fact that my business owes taxes to the town of Coventry. What's in question is the amount that is owed," said Gorman. " My attorneys and my accountant are working to determine what that amount is. Once that amount has been determined, I will absolutely do what'…

Raptakis Calls on Primary Opponent to Pay Back Taxes

David Gorman, Union President of Central Coventry Fire District, owns a landscaping company which owes property taxes and penalties to town dating back to 2008.

State Senate candidate Lou Raptakis is calling on his District 33 Democratic primary opponent, David Gorman, to pay back nearly $10,000 in back tangible property taxes and penalties to the town of Coventry dating back to 2008.  Raptakis said David Gorman, who is the union President of the Central Coventry Fire District and is currently serving as interim Fire Chief due to the departure of former Chief Robert Seltzer, owns a landscaping company—D. Gorman Landscaping—which has not paid any tangible property taxes to the town since 2009 and made only a partial payment on its 2008 tax bill.  “As a candidate for public office and an employee of a local fire district, Mr. Gorman has an obligation to pay his taxes in a timely way,” said …
