Players, coaches and parents celebrate the start of the the 2012 season.

The Coventry Cal Ripken League got off to a rousing start on a cool, brisk Saturday morning in Opening Day ceremonies held at its home fields behind Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School. Thirteen teams of boys and girls ages 4-10 dressed in colorful uniforms and hats marched onto the field with their coaches as parents, relatives and friends applauded, snapped pictures and took videos. “Opening day is one of those special days that kids and their families seem to remember,” said Lou Simon, in his first year as League President. “I can still remember my first one when I was a 7-year-old player and how I felt seeing all the players in uniform, the smell of the grass, the National Anthem and all the pomp and circumstance.” In a special twist …

Post 14-1 victory over Scituate.

Dakota Reyes hurled a complete game two-hitter and struck out 10 batters while her Coventry Crush teammates delivered many key hits in a 14-1 win over Scituate in a Darlington Girls Softball League Tournament game held at Paine Field on Friday night. Nearly every Coventry player had at least a hit. Shannon Tiernan, Sierra Reyes, McKenzie Ricci, Dakota Reyes, Caitlin Gamelin and Miranda Medeiros each had two hits for the winners.   Coventry struck for three runs- one in the first inning and two in the second- mostly on walks. They scored three more times in the third on a series of more walks, but their bats erupted later. Little League State Tournament: Steve Salisbury of Cranston West Pitches No Hitter

Central Coventry loses, 3-0 in first game of tourney.

Steve Salisbury of Cranston West needed just 71 pitches and faced only 19 batters- one short of perfection- in a no-hit masterpiece against Central Coventry, resulting in a 3-0 victory to begin the Rhode Island State Little League All-Stars Major Division Tournament held at Warwick West Side on late Saturday afternoon. “It was a phenomenal performance,” said Cranston West manager Gary Bucci of a performance he or no other CWLL official could ever recall being duplicated in their league. "He (Salisbury) is so skilled that he could call his own game.” The righty struck out seven batters and was denied a perfect game when he hit Regine with a pitch in the fourth inning. Richard Vaughn hit the only ball hit to the outfield by a Central …

Babe Ruth Baseball: Coventry 14s Warwick Fall To Warwick

Brendan Rix' 6 RBI secure the 12-9 win for Warwick.

Brendan Rix had four hits and six RBI, and stroked a three-run, bases-loaded double to deep center in the fifth inning to lead Warwick past Coventry, 12-9, in a loser’s bracket game of the Rhode Island Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars State Tournament held at Cranston Stadium on Tuesday night. Warwick reliever Danny Greaves got off to a rough start in his four-inning stint, but the tall righty settled in afterward, retiring the side in the fifth and getting two Coventry batters on a groundout and another on a fly ball. He worked his way out of a jam in the seventh, forcing a two-out popup to end the game after a leadoff single, an error and a two-out walk loaded the bases. “Danny (Greaves) has been pretty much lights out pitching for us," …

Babe Ruth 14's Plug On, 6-1 Over Cumberland

Pitching by Shawn Pacifico keys All-Stars win.

The quest by Coventry to emerge from the loser’s bracket and make it to the finals of the Babe Ruth 14 year-old All-Stars State Championship playoffs began with a 6-1 victory over Cumberland at Cranston Stadium on Friday night. "The pitching by Shawn Pacifico and Anthony Masseur in relief was the main story,” said Coventry manager Joe Vigeant. “I was impressed by Shawn because he hadn’t pitched in a while and he only made 66 pitches and did a nice job changing speeds. I didn’t like that we had 10 strikeouts, but we had some good situational hitting.” Pacifico pitched five innings, scattering four hits and striking out four, while issuing just one walk and hitting a batter. He also chipped in with a double. But the offense also featured …

Tyler Walsh has inside-the-park Home Run.

Tyler Walsh hit a spectacular inside-the-park three-run homer in the third inning for Coventry, but North Providence-Smithfield still prevailed, 7-5, in the winner’s bracket of the Rhode Island Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Star State Tournament held at Cranston Stadium. Brandon Kenyon started for Coventry and retired the first two batters in the first inning. Then six straight batters reached base. C.J. Dandeneau (3-for-3, two runs scored and one RBI), started a five-run rally on an infield hit despite a diving stab and just-too-late throw to first by Coventry shortstop, Max Marcotte. Following an RBI single by Tim Lombardi and a few walks, Nick Russo hit a two-run single and he’d score on a wild pitch, passed ball and error on a rundown. …

With rain halting action last Friday, play resumed in the second inning with Wickford leading, 2-1.
