Letter to the Editor: Simple and Direct Will Get the Job Done

At Monday night's Central Coventry Fire District meeting held at the Town Hall Annex, the big item on the mind of the crowd was a proposal to raise our Fire Tax rate from 18/k to 27/k. Most people were up in arms but to be fair I think that the whole business might have gotten a better reception had it been presented a little differently. The District presented the idea as being only about a 5 percent increase on the basis that, had they had to meet this year's budget using this year's tax base, which is lower due to re-valuation, then they would have had to have charged 22 percent. So the leap to 27 percent is only 5 percent. That line of logic is so complicated it makes my teeth ache. There are a couple of problems with this …
