Rams, Russo Ground Eagles for State Title

Coventry resident Alyssa Jacolucci was named to the All-Tournament team after Sunday's game.

KINGSTON – Coventry’s Alyssa Jacolucci had 19 points and Davida Dale chipped in 14 points, four steals and a block as the La Salle Rams steamrolled Barrington 62-29 for a girls’ basketball state title Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island Kingston’s campus. La Salle led by 10 points throughout most of the first half, increasing the margin to 35-22 at halftime. A stifling defense and Barrington’s frustration with foul calls against them led to just seven points for the Eagles in the second half. While the Rams did seem to get the benefit of more calls, La Salle also played a more skilled and aggressive game. The Rams – especially Jacolucci – finished when given opportunities down low, and their press …

Mariners Overwhelm Oakers in 2nd Half

Coventry has no answer for the long limbs of Abby McKanna, and offense from Maggie Salomone and Chelsea Sahagian.

PROVIDENCE – Another game, and another strong run by Narragansett in the second half, led to a second-straight Division II title game berth for the Mariners. The second-seeded Mariners played even with No. 11 Coventry for about a half, but pulled away as the second half started for a 59-42 win Wednesday night in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs at the Murray Center on the Rhode Island College campus. “The first five minutes of both halves are crucial,” Narragansett head coach Kathryn Mahoney said. “They turn on that high pressure.” Narragansett received balancing scoring from its starting five – Maggie Salomone, Abby McKanna, Chelsea Sahagian, Hannah Maymon and Ali Castrovillari. Except for Alicia Simeone subbing in for about …

[VIDEO] Coventry Survives Marathon Game vs. Mount

Coventry will play The Townies for the girls’ volleyball state title on Saturday at Keaney Gym.

In a match full of emotional ups and downs, the Coventry Oakers ultimately proved to be a bit more composed than Mount St. Charles, winning the fifth set 16-14. To win, Coventry overcame two players bumping into each other on a Mount serve at 14-13, which would have won the game for Mount. Coventry returned the serve, and an attack by Mount sailed out of bounds. With the game now knotted at 14, a volley between the two teams led to a service error by Mount. Coventry then ended the game with a kill by Kelsey Ferrara that Mount couldn’t block properly. Coventry will play East Providence for the state title at 5 p.m. Saturday at Keaney Gym. Girls Sports Wrap-Up: Soccer - Cranston West Eliminates Oakers, 1-0, in Quarterfinals

Volleyball - Spikers Move On to Semifinals

Girls Soccer A goal by midfielder Leandar Ly in the second half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 victory over Coventry at Cranston Stadium in a RIIL Division One Girls Soccer preliminary game held at Cranston Stadium on a chilly Friday afternoon. Cranston, which avenged a first-game loss, 3-1 to the Oakers, in the regular season, now advances to the quarterfinals to face La Salle Academy. Ly scored on a right corner kick by Alicia Stanton who directed the ball perfectly to her teammate who then headed in the ball past the outstretched hands and diving effort of Oakers keeper Giana Palermo. Brisk winds of over 25 miles per hour limited both team’s scoring opportunities as they changed ends each half.  Oakers head coach Chris Daigneault …
