Tips for Keeping Pets Safe As Temps Creep Near 100 Degrees

Heatstroke can be fatal for pets. The Humane Society of the United States reminds pet owners to make sure their dog gets plenty of water and to limit the intensity of exercise.

  According to the National Weather Service, Kent County is on the cusp of a brutal, if brief, heat wave and has issued a Heat Advisory in response. The Humane Society of the United States offers the following tips for keeping your pets safe and cool during the extreme heat this week: Never leave your pets in a parked car. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85 degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. NWS Issues Heat Advisory for Kent County

Providence county residents should also take caution during the extreme heat.

  On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory for Providence and Kent counties that is expected to be in effect through Thursday. Forecasters are predicting temperatures in the 90s, and with humidity, a heat index of 100 to 104 degrees.
