Coventry resident Nicole Bourget is one of twenty-models to walk the runway at the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s Our Heroes Annual Survivor Fashion Show. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation announced Monday that Coventry resident and breast cancer survivor Leah Hooks will be the honorary coach for Providence College Women’s Basketball on Tuesday evening. “I am far from a basketball player,” said Hooks, amused at the irony of her appointment. “I tried out for the women’s team at Bryant University, but realized it was not for me after all the running.” Hooks, however, is excited about the distinguished role as honorary coach because of her love of the game. Though she did not hit the hardwood as a member of Bryant University, she served as a statistician for the school’s basketball games, making her the first woman at the school to hold that position. On Monday, May 7th, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation Hope Bus will be at Centerville Bank, 777 Tiogue Ave. in Coventry. The Hope Bus, a 38-foot pink recreational vehicle, is The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s mobile resource and wellness unit. Hope Bus programs educate and comfort women with breast cancer, their family members and their friends, with special attention paid to uninsured, low-income and high-risk women. When 21-year-old Ethan Hattoy and his family discovered that his aunt, Stephanie had been diagnosed with breast cancer this past January, he knew he had to do something to support her and the fight against the disease. It was then that he and his family, owners of Hattoy's Nursery and Garden Center, decided to host a Breast Cancer Awareness Day to raise money for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation and to educate the community about the disease and how to prevent it. The event is scheduled for June 2 with a rain date of June 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held at the garden center at 315 Blackrock Road in Coventry.
