Coventry police officers and Central Coventry firefighters will face off against one another in a basketball game on Friday at 7 p.m. in the CHS gymnasium. This marks the second year that the two public safety departments have competed for bragging rights while helping local residents in need. The game is also one of several charity events held in recent years, including a softball game that will be played again this spring. Admission to Friday night's event is free of charge, however guests are asked to donate a non-perishable item to the Food Bank at the gymnasium's entrance when they arrive. The baskets will be distributed to families on Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon, volunteers joined Food Bank Coordinator Stefani Dugas to create over 100 Thanksgiving food baskets for local families. The baskets contain all of the fixings for a traditional meal, including a turkey or a Shaw's gift card to purchase one, fresh potatoes and carrots, eggs, margarine, corn, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling and a pie crust. The majority of the items were donated to the food bank by way of the a recent food drive done by local boy scouts, while bulk items like potatoes, carrots and pie filling were purchased from Walmart. Firefighters unloaded cases of the Thanksgiving staple on Thursday afternoon.
Members of the Coventry Firefighters Union arrived at the town's Food Bank on Thursday afternoon to deliver 70 14-pound turkeys to be given to families in need for their holiday meals. This is the second year that the Union has donated turkeys in addition to other various fundraisers that are held throughout the year to support the food bank, such as the Police vs. Fire Charity Basketball Game in the spring.
