Blackrock Students Raise More Than $5K for PTA Activities

The fifth Annual Buzz-A-Thon is the school's only major fund-raiser each year.

  Blackrock Elementary students from Pre-K through fifth grade, along with teachers and parents walked more than 100 total miles around the school's 1/8-mile asphalt track on Thursday for a good cause. The occasion was the Fifth Annual Buzz-A-Thon, a fund-raising event (named after the school's bumblebee mascot) during which students in grades Pre-K through two walk 20 minutes around the track and grades three through five walk 30 minutes while wearing their Buzz-A-Thon t-shirts in varying colors depending on grade level. The event was started to replace the typical candy, candle or cookie dough sales done in the past. Tiogue School Dedicates Peace Garden

Eagle Scout Ethan Spearman created garden beds for the school in order to improve the playground and honor retirees.

  Students and teachers from Tiogue Elementary School, along with family and friends gathered on the school's playground on Thursday to celebrate the newly-constructed "Peace Garden". The crowd recognized Ethan Spearman, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 147 Quidnesset who created the garden for the school as part of his Eagle Scout project. He created six wooden garden boxes that students will plant flowers in, as well as center "Peace Garden", complete with "Peace Pole". Each individual garden was dedicated by the school, to six faculty members who are retiring at the end of this school year.
