A bid package complete with project diagrams and photos was presented to and approved by the School Building Committee on Wednesday.
At the their latest meeting, members of the Coventry School Building Committee met with Torrado Architects Owner Luis Torrado and Vice President Brian O'Connell to discuss the progress that has been made on the planning and engineering of five school improvement projects that the company was contracted for in March. "We're doing very well and staying with our schedule," said Torrado. During the meeting, O'Connell presented to the Committee design development and schematic designs for each of the schools where work will be performed. Among them was an asbestos abatement plan correlating with state health department requirements which illustrated asbestos-ridden areas of the schools, including various roof and floor tile locations at …

Coventry School Building Committee members unanimously recommended Torrado Architects to the Town Council for the design and engineering of five large-scale school improvement projects.
After postponing their decision from Feb. 28 to allow more time to thoroughly examine bid proposals, members of the Coventry School Building Committee met again on Tuesday to review and discuss the nine bid proposals received last week for Architectural Engineering firm services. The chosen company will be contracted for the design and engineering of five district-wide school improvement projects approved by voters last November. (The full $8.55 million scope of work can be found in the School Improvement Bonds column published in November.) A five-member Sub-Committee met this past weekend to review each bid package, determine which company would be best qualified for the contract, and report back to the full Building Committee with …

As a number of bids were received shortly before the deadline, Committee members will take additional time to review them in detail before making a decision.
Members of the Coventry School Building Committee met on Thursday to review and discuss bid proposals received for Architectural Engineering firm services. The need for the services is the result of a successful bond campaign held last November 2012, during which five school improvement bonds were passed by Coventry voters to fund various projects throughout the school district. Sealed bids were accepted from Feb. 4-28, 2013 at the School Administration Offices on Flat River Rd. that contained proposals for miscellaneous renovations at six of the district's schools. Projects include roof repairs, a new athletic complex at Coventry High School, air quality upgrades, paving/sidewalks/flooring and fire code upgrades at the high school, the …

An additional educator recognition and a Wellness Committee update were also topics of discussion at the Feb. 26 School Committee meeting.
School Committee members began Tuesday's meeting by acknowledging several educators from Washington Oak School for their quick thinking that ultimately saved the life of a student on the morning of Jan. 10. School Nurse-Teacher Diane Kowal, Special Education Teacher Lou Turchetta, one-on-one classroom nurse/R.N. Tammy Begones and Occupational Therapist Bethany Horne were recognized for providing emergency medical care and treatment to a first grade student who went into respiratory arrest after getting off the school bus that morning. A letter from the student's parents to Superintendent Michael Almeida was presented at the meeting that began; "I am writing this letter to you on behalf of myself and my family for the gratitude, …

The policy would encourage parents to prepay school lunches and repay charged lunch balances in a timely fashion.
At Tuesday night's meeting, School Committee members presented the first reading of the Coventry School District's updated school lunch charge policy. Finance Director Robin Pelletier explained to the committee, administrators and parents present that there has been an increasing trend of children at the elementary school level throwing away the meals sent with them by their parents and charging hot lunches served by ARAMARK. Because of this trend, the school department is mailing letters home to the parents of every student that has a balance of $10 or more - a task that is costing the district about $100 a month in postage. "Any deficit hits the bottom line in our lunch budget," said Pelletier. She went on to explain that along with …

I know at Blackrock you can prepay for free by sending a check or cash in with your child...tell the lunch person to add the change to your account. Then you can simply check your balance online...or be alerted once the account gets to a certain level. I won't pay the fee!   more ›
