A bid package complete with project diagrams and photos was presented to and approved by the School Building Committee on Wednesday.

At the their latest meeting, members of the Coventry School Building Committee met with Torrado Architects Owner Luis Torrado and Vice President Brian O'Connell to discuss the progress that has been made on the planning and engineering of five school improvement projects that the company was contracted for in March. "We're doing very well and staying with our schedule," said Torrado. During the meeting, O'Connell presented to the Committee design development and schematic designs for each of the schools where work will be performed. Coventry School Building Committee members unanimously recommended Torrado Architects to the Town Council for the design and engineering of five large-scale school improvement projects.

After postponing their decision from Feb. 28 to allow more time to thoroughly examine bid proposals, members of the Coventry School Building Committee met again on Tuesday to review and discuss the nine bid proposals received last week for Architectural Engineering firm services. The chosen company will be contracted for the design and engineering of five district-wide school improvement projects approved by voters last November. (The full $8.55 million scope of work can be found in the School Improvement Bonds column published in November.)  A five-member Sub-Committee met this past weekend to review each bid package, determine which company would be best qualified for the contract, and report back to the full Building Committee with …

Building Committee Tables School Improvement Bid Recommendation

As a number of bids were received shortly before the deadline, Committee members will take additional time to review them in detail before making a decision.

Members of the Coventry School Building Committee met on Thursday to review and discuss bid proposals received for Architectural Engineering firm services. The need for the services is the result of a successful bond campaign held last November 2012, during which five school improvement bonds were passed by Coventry voters to fund various projects throughout the school district. Sealed bids were accepted from Feb. 4-28, 2013 at the School Administration Offices on Flat River Rd. that contained proposals for miscellaneous renovations at six of the district's schools. Projects include roof repairs, a new athletic complex at Coventry High School, air quality upgrades, paving/sidewalks/flooring and fire code upgrades at the high school, the …

A Taxpayer

9:32 am on Monday, November 5, 2012

I find the bond issue to be rather infuriating. It is the result of years and years of the school committee's failure to adequately budget for building maintenance, and years and years of the failure of administrators to do their jobs. Now they've painted the taxpayers into a corner (actually, lack of painting is also a problem) and are forcing a tax increase to pay for their lack of planning. I'…   more ›

At Thursday night's School Committee meeting, committee members accepted the resignation of Coventry School Superintendent Michael Convery. Healthy Changes in Coventry School Cafeterias

The following letter from ARAMARK highlights the changes being implemented during the current school year.

Dear Coventry Families, This fall, Coventry Public Schools cafeterias are meeting tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Rhode Island has long been ahead of federal nutrition standards surrounding school lunch, but as federal regulations catch up, you can expect to see some changes in your child’s lunch menu. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch! School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in School Year 2012-2013, school lunches will meet additional standards …

This comes as welcome news! I have to say, I was very disappointed last year when my 4th grader would come home "starving." I would ask what he ate for lunch and he said he had chosen a pretzel and yogurt... PRETZEL and YOGURT is not a healthy lunch. I realize there was another option that he could have picked, but really these children need better choices than pretzels for lunch!!!   more ›
