Coventry Schools Rank on Low End of Absenteeism Study

A Channel 12 study of school absenteeism found that Coventry had some of the lowest rates in Rhode Island.

Coventry schools fell mainly on the lower end of the scale in what the state Department of Education terms "chronic absenteeism," meaning students who miss more than 18 days of the school year. WPRI Channel 12 recently reported that 17 percent of all students in Rhode Island were classified as chronically absent during the 2011-12 school year, with four Providence high schools reporting more than 50 percent of students on the list. Locally, Coventry High School recorded 23.05 percent chronic absenteeism, followed by Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School with 13.33 percent. Coventry elementary schools had fewer than 10 percent of their students in the chronically absent category - Blackrock School (9.37), Western Coventry School (9.35), …

School Committee Calls Off Early Learning Center Plans

Members changed their minds due to the uncertainty of future funding for the center.

Members of the Coventry School Committee voted 3-1 Tuesday night in favor of not opening the vacant Oak Haven Elementary School as an early learning center next school year.  If utilized as proposed, the Oak Haven Early Learning Center, would have accommodated the majority of Coventry's Pre-K and Kindergarten students, with the exception of those from Western Coventry due to busing constraints. The main purpose for opening the Center was to create improved teaching environments in the form of additional instruction space as well as the ability to create computer labs in several schools, allowing the district to meet the ever-evolving state and federal technology standards and requirements. In 2009, the school was closed as a cost-saving …

School Officials Share Plans for Oak Haven Early Learning Center

Attached is the 2013-2015 two-year proposal to reopen Oak Haven Elementary School as an Early Learning Center for the majority of Coventry's Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students.

Making progress on an idea that has been discussed for more than a year, Coventry school officials have begun to plan for the reopening of Oak Haven Elementary School for use as an Early Learning Center. Approximately $100,000 will be needed to reopen the school that was closed in 2009 - $50,000 of which would be immediately used for fire code upgrades. Changes and improvements will also be required to bring the building up to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. At the March 26 Town Council meeting, during which school officials shared the fiscal 2013-2014 recommended operating and capital budgets, Superintendent Mike Almeida told Council members that the Early Learning Center would create a better environment for students …

I absolutely agree with Smitty. The School Committee somehow went from a group of advisors to the untouchables. We as Taxpayers have to Take back control of the Check Book. There is no reason to have a separate entity in town that has so much influence and control. I for one have a hard time understanding how the graduating classes of today are relatively the same size as those of 25 to 30 years …   more ›

School Officials Present NECAP Results; Discuss Student Support Options

Concerning assessment results in some grade levels instill in educators the need for effective intervention and support systems.

At the March 12 meeting of the Coventry School Committee, Asst. Superintendent Michael Convery gave a presentation on the district's most recent New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) testing results. The presentation included a 3-year comparison of NECAP proficiency for each grade, as well as comparative results for each Coventry school and Rhode Island state averages. Overall, Coventry NECAP scores have been and continue to be above the state average in both English Language Arts (Reading) and Math. The NECAP is scored on a scale of 1-4 as follows: Level 4 = Proficient with Distinction; Level 3 = Proficient; Level 2 = Partially Proficient; Level 1 = Substantially Below Proficient.
