State champs from Babe Ruth and Coventry Little Leagues were honored on Monday.
At Monday's Town Council meeting, two of Coventry's state championship-winning baseball teams were recognized for their accomplishments. Joining Council members were Senators Glen Shibley and Nick Kettle and Director of Parks and Recreation Guy Lefebvre. Coventry Little League America Division All Stars (11/12 age group) were honored for winning the Rhode Island State Championship and for their participation in the Northeast Regional Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. The players were also escorted from Paine Field to the meeting on several Central Coventry Fire Department firetrucks, followed by a rescue and led by a police car with lights and sirens. The 2012 RI State Champs now eye the New England title.
The Coventry American Little League 11/12 All-Stars will be in the brilliant glare of the local and regional spotlight after their historic achievement last week. The squad has advanced to the 2012 Little League Baseball East Region Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, after defeating Cranston Western, 4-3, in the Rhode Island Little League Majors Division state championship last week in Lincoln. Coventry earlier overwhelmed competition in winning the District 3 title. Coventry now contends for the New England championship when they play Fairfield, CT, on Friday, August 3 at 8:15 p.m., following Opening Day ceremonies.
