CHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame Inductee: Ted Szymkowicz

The second annual Hall of Fame induction will be held at Nino's on Lake Tiogue on March 28 at 6 p.m.

  Ted Szymkowicz has made an unprecedented contribution to the athletic program at Coventry High School over a 50-year period as a student athlete, teacher, and coach. A 1955 graduate of Coventry High School, Ted played baseball and basketball for four years, leading the state in scoring in basketball (class C) and was selected First Team All-Kent County and was named the 1955 Outstanding Basketball Player in Kent County. Ted also received similar awards in baseball. As a senior, he was awarded the Babe Ruth Sportsmen Award at CHS. Ted moved on after high school to play baseball, basketball, and golf at Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, PA and was selected the Outstanding Athlete for 1958. The second annual Hall of Fame induction will be held at Nino's on Lake Tiogue on March 28 at 6 p.m.

  John Ball has dedicated most of his adult life to vocational-technical education and to improving career opportunities for young people. John earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island then moved on to earn a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Connecticut. He also earned his C.A.G.S diploma in educational administration from the same institution. Over the years, John continued his studies at a number of institutions including Cornell University, Temple University, the University of Maryland and the University of Colorado, among others. John begin his teaching career at Coventry High in 1957 as a vocational agriculture teacher and after 10 years of motivating students, was promoted to the director of …

Police Investigate Former CHS Teacher for Alleged Inappropriate Behavior With Students

No criminal activity was found during the investigation of Todd Gillheeney's alleged relationships with two Coventry High School students.

  A former Coventry High School teacher charged with threatening school officials had been under investigation for potentially inappropriate relationships with students, Coventry police have confirmed. No charges were filed. Todd Gillheeney, 33, of 11 Larchmont Drive, Coventry, was arrested on March 1 after school officials forwarded several tweets from his Twitter account to School Resource Officer Jason Burlingame. The tweets were deemed threatening/disturbing. Gillheeney, who was recently fired form the school system, was charged with threats to public officials, cyberstalking and crank or obscene phone calls (harassing).  School officials have declined to give the reason for Gillheeney's termination, referring to it only as a "…

CHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame Inductee: Dr. Kate McCarthy-Barnett

The second annual Hall of Fame induction will be held at Nino's on Lake Tiogue on March 28 at 6 p.m.

  Dr. Kate McCarthy-Barnett is a 1985 graduate of Coventry High School who has distinguished herself as an individual who has conquered adversity, achieved distinction in the field of education, and has worked tirelessly on behalf of people with disabilities and the elderly during times of natural disasters. While at Coventry High School, Kate developed a chronic illness that at times caused her to be bed-ridden and required her to be home tutored for long periods of time. Though it was difficult, Kate never gave up and graduated from CHS in June, 1985. After graduating, Kate worked to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees and then a Doctorate in Education. She moved on to conduct research and teach courses relating to eliminating barriers …

[CHAT] Gansett, Coventry, Prout in Hoops’ Playoffs

Follow along with our live blog for tonight’s action! Tip-off is around 6 p.m. at Rhode Island College.

Three Patch-area schools will be competing in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs tonight at Rhode Island College, and we will be providing a live chat and running play by play for the proceedings! Taking a look at each of the remaining teams, and how they won last Sunday: The winners of the two games play each other for the Division II title on 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island.

Oakers Upset Spartans

Scituate never recovers from hot first half shooting by Coventry, as the No. 11 Oakers move on in the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs.

  PROVIDENCE – A trio of 3-point shots from Sarah McGrath in the first half and 16 points from Alyssa Derrick helped No. 11 Coventry upset No. 3 Scituate 55-48 in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ basketball playoffs at Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon. Although McGrath only finished with 10, her open 3s in the first half opened up the paint the rest of the game for Coventry. This led to open midrange jumpers and rolls to the hoop for Derrick, and room for guards Thurstina Horton (10 points) and Katie Boudoin (9) to drive. Horton struggled with free throws down the stretch, but Scituate couldn’t capitalize. Coventry led by nine with 3:01 left, and only a late three by Jordin Pino kept the final margin under 10 points. …

CHS Students Build 'DAWG HAUS' for FEMA/RIEMA Outreach Program

Carpentry students built a structure that demonstrates improved building techniques used to prevent damage from storm events.

  Three seniors in Scott Leavitt's carpentry class at the Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School were given the opportunity to showcase their skills while demonstrating stronger building techniques for communities at risk of storm damage. Mark Kucal, Eddie Bailey and Thomas Maulodin were selected by Leavitt to construct a scale model FEMA "DAWG HAUS" (Disaster Avoidance with Good Home Attenuating Unionization System) out of scrap supplies from their classroom to demonstrate safer and stronger building techniques. Leavitt explained that he chose the three students because of their future involvement in the SkillsUSA competition in March where they will utilize the skills they have learned to compete against students …

Coventry Officials Present School Safety and Security Plans

An informational forum was held at Coventry High School on Wednesday.

  Since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, schools across the country have been taking steps to improve safety measures, and Coventry Public Schools are no different. On Wednesday evening, dozens of Coventry parents gathered in the high school auditorium for a School Safety & Security Forum to learn about the district's ongoing security evaluations and updated safety plans. A District School Safety and Security Committee was recently formed to oversee the safety and security of students, employees, families and community members while on school grounds. The 28-member committee consists of town officials, school committee members, police and fire personnel, principals and district administration directors. …

CHS to Host Third Annual Community Night

Current eighth grade students and their families are invited to visit Coventry High School on Wednesday night.

  About eight months before officially entering Coventry High School as freshman, members of the future Class of 2017 will be given the opportunity to see what is in store for them once they leave ASFMS. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, current eighth-grade students and their families are invited to the high school's third annual Community Night from 6-8:30 p.m. to preview the programs and extra-curricular activities that are offered. During the event, guests will have the chance to take a tour of the high school, led by CHS student mentors who will guide them through classrooms, labs, academic wings, the library media center and career center while answering any questions that the incoming freshman may have.
