CHS Senior Awarded Scholarship for Christmas Light Display Donations

Joey Conway is being recognized by the Metta Students Foundation for collecting donations to benefit The Tomorrow Fund and Coventry Food Bank at his popular Christmas light display in Western Coventry.

Kind, generous and caring are the words used by many to describe Coventry High School senior Joseph Conway. Each holiday season, the 18-year-old creates a winter wonderland of Christmas lights, figurines and music at his family's home in Western Coventry - a project that he begins planning for shortly after New Year's Day. Apart from spreading holiday cheer throughout his neighborhood, for the past three years, he has been using the display to collect non-perishable items for the Coventry Food Bank, and this past winter added The Tomorrow Fund as a beneficiary, also.  “My light display consists of 33,000 lights. My main reason for putting up the display is seeing the kids smile,” said Conway.  It is that spirit and dedication that made …

Gallery: CHS Principal Hobin Named RI High School Principal of the Year

Principal Mike Hobin was the Guest of Honor at a surprise ceremony on Friday morning.

On Friday morning, Coventry High School Principal Michael Hobin rushed to the school gymnasium after being told there was an urgent situation there and he was needed. This was completely true, but not at all what he expected. The entire student body and faculty, school district officials, and members of the Coventry Police Department, along with Hobin's wife, Susan, and several family members welcomed him with thunderous applause. The reception was well-deserved as Executive Director Patricia A. Hines and her colleagues at the Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP), recently selected Hobin to be named 2013 RI High School Principal of the Year.  The decision followed a March 14 visit to CHS from a RIASP selection committee …

That is a joke. This is the same man who called students' parents and told them that their kids should just drop out because they weren't going to graduate anyway and he didn't want his numbers to fall. He only cares about your education if you are a "perfect" student. If you're not, you are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum and he will treat you like a troublemaker regardless of what…   more ›

Michael Hobin Named Rhode Island High School Principal of the Year

Coventry High School's principal has been chosen for the honor by the Rhode Island Association of School Principals Board of Directors.

Writing his “Friday Focus” memo to his faculty each week, for his faculty’s professional growth, Principal Michael Hobin highlights excerpts from his own reading of current educational best practices. He also recognizes one or more teachers who have made an exceptional difference in student learning that week. This positive acknowledgement and professional leadership have served to build strong relationships within this large high school.  So, too, Mr. Hobin works consistently to provide opportunities for faculty and staff to become leaders within the school. By encouraging everyone to gain as much professional development training as possible and by permitting risk-taking, Mr. Hobin has promoted an environment of collegiality, …

Horace Mann presented the award to Becky Haynes for excellence in education.

Coventry High School faculty members recently gathered in the school's Media Center for a staff meeting. While surrounded by fellow educators, English teacher Rebecca Haynes was greeted with an enthusiastic round of applause when her name was announced as the Crystal Apple recipient. The award, presented by Horace Mann Insurance Company, recognizes educators across Rhode Island who are strategic, professional, collaborative, supportive and reflective. We all love Mary Ann...I knew some of the others but Mary Ann Cantino was the backbone of CHS. Who else could handle the ego of the teachers and administrators as well as the behavior of the students and parents!   more ›

Culinary Students Prepare 3,000 Cupcakes for RI Hospital Anniversary

The cupcakes were part of Rhode Island Hospital's 150th anniversary festivities on March 13.

On March 11, nearly 30 Culinary Arts students from the Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School baked, frosted, decorated and packaged 3,000 cupcakes for Rhode Island Hospital's 150th Anniversary celebration. Each employee of the hospital received either a chocolate or vanilla cupcake on Mar. 13 in commemoration of the event. Rhode Island Hospital officials asked the Rhode Island American Culinary Federation to prepare the cupcakes, and in turn RIACF contacted the Career Center to have its Culinary Arts students lend a hand. Over the course of the school day, students teamed up to create the 3,000 baked goodies which were then frosted and garnished with "Happy Birthday" toppers. Materials for the immense culinary …
