Gail's volunteer work continues to take root as she embarks on her fifth year of caring for the Coventry Community Garden.
For the past several years, hundreds of residents in need have benefited from nearly two tons of vegetables grown by Coventry Community Garden volunteers. All the produce that is grown in front of the Town Hall Annex on Flat River Rd. and at the ASFMS greenhouse has been donated to the Coventry Food Pantry, stored and then distributed as quickly as possible. Additional smaller gardens have been organized at Coventry High School and both Western Coventry and Blackrock elementary schools, and are tended to mainly by students. 1,600 pounds were harvested on Thursday.
Volunteers from the Coventry Community Garden, members of the Project FRIENDS Program and several helpful residents gathered on Thursday afternoon to harvest corn for neighbors in need from land on Flat River Road. Tim Gallagher, Owner of Old Saw Mill Farm has planted and donated crops and produce to the Coventry Food Bank for four years and 2012 is no exception. Gallagher explained that three separate corn plantings ripened simultaneously, making it imperative that the crops be harvested quickly. Thursday's harvest yielded 40 boxes of sweet corn weighing 40 pounds each - a total of 1,600 pounds that was distributed on Friday to Senior Center participants and to the food bank. "Tim has been very generous in donating plants and produce …
