October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the greatest challenges for those who have been newly diagnosed is finding sources of support. Patients are eager for information on everything from enduring surgery and chemotherapy to how to deal with hair loss. Best selling author and breast cancer survivor Barbara Delinsky has gathered the wisdom of hundreds of breast cancer survivors who are eager to inspire those who are new to the “breast cancer sisterhood.” She shares all of the stories and tidbits she found in her book "Uplift: Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors." Coventry resident Nicole Bourget will be featured in the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s 2013 “Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life” Calendar. The calendar features twelve Rhode Island women who each received a breast cancer diagnosis before the age of 40—eleven survivors and Kate Kenworthy-Rodrigues who lost her life to breast cancer earlier this year. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Pawtucket-based Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation recently hosted the 7th Annual Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life, the largest breast cancer awareness event in the Northeast. Breast Cancer Awareness Month turns a pink spotlight on our health. For some of us, it’s a reminder to schedule a mammogram. For others, it’s a chance to join an event that raises money for research or celebrates the survivors in our communities. For those who have lost a loved one to breast cancer, we honor them with races, with luminaries, with moments of silence. Though Breast Cancer Awareness Month lasts only 31 days, we never forget. Beginning October 2-3, the NFL, its clubs, players and the NFL Players Association will kick off their campaign "A Crucial Catch", a partnership with the American Cancer Society. The program focuses on raising funds for and awareness of annual breast screenings, especially for women 40 and older. Throughout October, NFL games will feature players, coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel, on-field pink ribbon stencils, special game balls and pink coins - all to help this important campaign. This year a number of Rhode Island High Schools have agreed to join in the effort and Coventry is one of them.
