Kimberly Grattan, a Bay View Academy senior from Coventry, has been selected to serve on the first Rhode Island Interscholastic League Student Advisory Board. According to the Assistant Director of the RIIL, Michael Lunney, all 47 student athletes who attended the New England Student Leadership Conference at Stone Hill College this past July, were invited to apply for a spot on the Board. The application included questions regarding the students’ participation in school sports, their cumulative GPA, and their opinions on leadership and the role of sports in schools. DANIELLE RIGGIN Danielle Riggin was given the Air Force Award for a demonstrated excellence in both math and science. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, the Excalibur Science Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. MARGARET TROSIN Margaret Trosin was bestowed with the Sister Mary Silvia Rice Award. This award is given annually in honor of Sister Mary Sylvia Rice, whose many years of service to Bay View include history teacher, chair of the History and Social Science Department and moderator of the Debate Club. The Bay View Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society recently ran a successful Baby Food Drive to benefit McAuley House in Providence. McAuley House is a meal and hospitality site for people and families in need. This spring’s collection yielded seven baskets of age appropriate baby food and was delivered to the organization on Friday, May 4. Coventry residents that took part in the drive were Brittany Dalphonse, Holly DiMauro, Kimberly Grattan, Bianca Kohler, Courtney McArthur and Shannon McArthur. The collection began in response to a need observed by members of the Bay View Chapter of the National Honor Society. Kathryn O’Connor of Coventry, an eighth-grader at Bay View Academy attained national recognition for her excellent performance on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations of which she won a bronze medal. A total of 49 students collectively earned two gold, six silver and ten bronze medals along with thirty-two honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012.” Students from Bay View have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Middle School Spanish teacher…

Bay View Academy’s first, second and third varsity crew teams had open water victories in a Farmington, CT regatta on Apr. 14. The regatta took place on the 1250 meter Farmington River Course. Kimberly Grace Grattan, Raquel Pederzani and Danielle Riggin of Coventry were among 27 Bay View Academy students recently inducted into Excalibur National Honor Society for Excellence in Science. They were welcomed into the Society by keynote speaker and Bay View Alumna, Susan Lima Henry (’79) who is the Microbiology Technical Supervisor at East Side Clinical Laboratory in East Providence. Chartered for the first time at Bay View in the 1999, Excalibur is a National Honor Society that fosters excellence in the study of science, the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of the world through technology and research.
