Police, Middle School Staff to Play in Charity Basketball Game

Friday's event will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

  On Friday night at 7 p.m., members of the Coventry Police Department will take on staff from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School in a basketball game to support the Wounded Warrior Project. WWP is a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 whose stated mission is to "honor and empower wounded warriors" of the United States Armed Forces.  According to its website, the Wounded Warrior Project "works to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs." ASFMS Students Win Lego Robot Programming Award

Students competed in the FIRST LEGO League Rhode Island State Championship on Saturday.

  Seven students from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School were recognized for their programming skills when they competed in the 12th Annual FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament on Jan. 12. Feinstein Einsteins participated in the event that was held at Roger Williams University's Recreation Center along with other Rhode Island students ages 9-14 from public, private, parochial and home schools. Teams of students can be sponsored by schools, home school families or associations, churches, after-school clubs, scouts, 4H and neighborhood groups. The FIRST LEGO League program actively engages nearly 500 RI students every year in designing, building and programming a robot to compete for points on a game table at the annual competition. …

ASFMS Admins Make Good on Promise to Students

Students from Feinstein Middle School were rewarded for surpassing their food drive goal with some not-so-typical prizes.

  Four administrators from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School fulfilled promises yesterday that were made to students last month. Beginning on Nov. 26 until Dec. 19, the ASFMS Student Council in conjunction with the Feinstein Good Deeds program, sponsored a food drive for 'Tis the Season and the Coventry Community Food Bank. The drive is an annual event and this year's goal was to collect 8,000 cans. To motivate students, several administrators made promises that they would have to fulfill if the 8,000 cans of food were collected. And motivate they did. As of Wednesday, the students had collected 12,545 non-perishable food items, far surpassing their goal. On Thursday morning, after the music department's winter concert, the students …

Lady Falcons Soccer Team Conquers Deering 5-1

The team continues to improve its record, now at 6 and 0.

  The ASFMS Lady Falcons soccer team defeated Deering Middle School Tuesday 5-1 in the rain, improving their record to 6 and 0.  Jordan Dwyer scored the first goal of the game on a corner kick with an assist by Maddy Dacey. Emily Chabot scored the second goal on a deflection from Samantha Meyers shot on net. The Falcons let up a goal early in the second half, however, the girls worked together to score three more goals in during the game.  Scoring for the Falcons were Amanda Guindon, Hannah McGuirk and Kendyl Ward. Also playing well for the Falcons were Lauren Deus, Carly Furtado, Lynn Geyer and Kasey Gagan.  The team will play Gallagher Middle School at home on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Come support the team!

Lady Falcons Defeat EWG 4-0

The Girls' Soccer team brought their record to 4 and 0 on Thursday.

  The Feinstein Middle School Lady Falcons defeated Exeter-West Greenwich 4-0 improving their record to 4 and 0 on Thursday afternoon. The offense was led by Hannah McGurik who scored a goal early in the game when Maddy Dacey, who played her best game of the season, dribbled down the field and passed to Amanda Guindon who assisted in the first goal of the game.  Guindon scored the second goal of the game on a long ball from Lynn Geyer on the defensive line. McGuirk and Samantha Meyers added 2 more goals in the first half to put the game out of reach for EWG. Also playing well for the Falcons were Carly Furtado, Kendyl Ward, Victoria Jacques, Katie Lavigne and Sydney Poole.  The girls will play and away game at Cole Junior High School (100 …

ASFMS Holds Athletic Awards Night

Dozens of student athletes were recognized at Thursday night's ceremony.

  On May 31, parents, teachers and students gathered at Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School to recognize achievements earned by the various sports teams and coaches throughout the 2011-2012 school year. The ASFMS Athletes of the Year were also announced, honoring Kaitlin Mattera and Dominic Aguiar for their athletic accomplishments and sportmanship during the year.

ASFMS Girls Softball Team Wins First Playoff Round

The girls won by an impressive score of 11-1.

  The Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School girls’ softball team won the opening round of their playoffs by defeating North Smithfield Middle School by a score of 11-1 on Wednesday. Kaitlin Mattera pitched five strong innings allowing striking out 10 while walking four and allowing two hits - the run was scored on an error and was unearned. She also had a triple and scored the first run of the day. Offensively the team was paced by Brooke Kerezetessey and Alexis Shopac. Both players went three for three on the day combing for three singles and three doubles while also scoring two runs. ASFMS Grading and Homework Policy Update Presented

The School Committee was presented with revisions to the ASFMS Grading and Homework Policies.

  At Tuesday night's School Committee meeting, Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School Principal Dr. Michael Almeida and Asst. Principal Dr. Arthur Lisi presented a review of the Grading and Homework Policy Pilot Program that was instituted at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. The policy aims to make sense of why some students are not successful in their academics, to bring guidelines up-to-date and synchronize them with the current standards-based assessments and to develop procedures based on educator surveys and research. As discussed in September when the pilot program began, the policy's guiding beliefs focus on assessing a student's performance on his or her authentic learning (Product), work ethic skills (Process) and academic …

Local Students Selected to Perform in Honor Bands

The students were chosen from thousands of nominees across New England.

  Four Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School students from the school's music department have been selected from thousands of candidates to participate in the fourth John Philip Sousa National Honor Bands - New England Region on Apr. 19-21 in Harvard, MA. Eighth graders Trevor Campbell (Tenor Saxophone), John Palmer (Trumpet), Richard Vaughn (Trombone) and Stavros Zaraokostas (Baritone Saxophone) were nominated for the honor by their band director, Anthony Costa who sent in bios and accolades for each student to put them in the running. "I nominate kids based on their ability to be prepared when they go to rehearsals, take the opportunity seriously and know how to represent their school," said Costa. Lady Falcons Take Home State Championship

The girls won the championship game with a 27 point lead.

  The Feinstein Middle School Lady Falcons defeated North Cumberland Middle School Wednesday night 47-20 to become the Girls Middle School Basketball State Champions.  The girls played powerful defense holding N. Cumberland to just four points in the first quarter and one point in the second quarter. Dakota Grenier had one of her best games all year leading the team in rebounding and scoring 15 points. Thurstina Horton added nine points and Kaitlin Mattera scored another eight. Sarah McGrath contributed four points and Phylicia Horton scored three. Maxine Colvin, Hannah McGuirk, Casey Gagan and Kylie Osterhout all scored two points each.   An all-around impressive effort was made by the entire team.
