Coventry Youth Lacrosse: Spring 2013 Wrap-Up

  The 2013 Spring Youth Lacrosse Season concluded Sunday June 9 with Coventry Youth Lacrosse well-represented at the 2013 RI Youth Lacrosse State Semifinals and Championship matches at Brown University and Moses Brown School. Coach Tom Julian led his U11 Red team to the state Semifinal game as did Coach Dad Carignan with the U13 Red team. Both teams were met with very stiff competition from long-tenured programs in Portsmouth and South County. Although Coventry U11 and U13 did not advance to the championship, we are proud of everything these teams have accomplished. ASFMS Hosts 2013 Athletic Awards Night

Athletes from the school's Boys' and Girls' Soccer and Basketball teams, along with Wrestling, Cheerleading, Baseball and Softball were recognized for their hard work and dedication during their respective season.

  On Thursday, May 30, parents, coaches and athletes from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School gathered in the school's auditorium to celebrate the ASFMS 2012-2013 Athletic Night.  Before athletic awards were presented, guests viewed a video montage featuring photos of athletes at team practices and games throughout the 2012-2013 school year. In addition, every team was featured in their own slideshow which highlighted all aspects of the season, from practice, gameplay, and travel to away games, as well as the occasional candid shot of teammates hanging out and spending quality time together. 3 Coventry Athletes to Play in National Championship Soccer Tournament

The soccer players will face off against the best teams in the Eastern U.S.

  Three Coventry athletes will soon be competing in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series - part of the country's most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The event is coming to the University of Rhode Island in Kingston from June 27 to July 2, 2013. Coventry resident Ryan Morel and his Under-12 boys state championship team from Bruno United Soccer Club will be up against the best competition and players in the Eastern United States. Sydney Poole and Liz Kenney, also of Coventry, will also be representing Rhode Island with their Under-13 girls state championship Bruno United team. The championships are a competition of US Youth Soccer State Champions from 15 Eastern states, including the recently crowned Rhode Island …

Rhode Island Day At Fenway Park Stars Heather Abbott

Abbott, who lost part of her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings, threw out the first pitch. A Coventry student was also rewarded a scholarship from the Sox.

  Saturday was Rhode Island Day at Fenway Park and a special Rhode Islander threw out the first pitch. On her way from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to her Newport home, Heather Abbott stopped by Fenway Park and walked out to the pitcher's mound.  The last time she was at Fenway Park had been Monday, April 15, Patriot's Day. After she left the stadium, Abbott and friends went to the see the finish of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. She was caught in the second bombing and lost part of her left leg as a result of her injuries. According to the Providence Journal, Abbott got out of her wheelchair and walked out to the mound at Fenway Park to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Saturday. Players, coaches, family members and friends gathered at Paine Field on Sunday, April 28 to kick off the 2013 baseball season.

  Babe Ruth Baseball League opening ceremonies included a visit from the 15-year-old players of the 2012 State Championship team. The League also unveiled the 2012 Championship sign to recognize the team's outstanding efforts last year! League President Jim Spearman presented Jacob Laurence with the 2012 Sportsmanship Award, as well.

CHS Track Teams Thrive at Invitational Meet

Members of the Coventry High School Boys' and Girls' Track teams performed well at the statewide Rick Schomp meet on Saturday.

  On Saturday, May 4, athletes from the CHS Boys' and Girls' Track teams made their community proud with their performances in the 2013 Rick Schomp Track and Field Invitational held at Curtis Corner Middle School in South Kingstown. The 19-event state meet qualifier is held annually in memory of Rick Schomp, Brown University athlete, dedicated teacher and coach at Chariho and South Kingstown schools.   CPD Safety Event:  The Coventry Police Department will host a free Child Seat Installation and Kids Workshop today from 12-3 p.m. at Walgreens (875 Tiogue Ave.). CSA Walk-In Registration: The Coventry Soccer Association is hosting a Walk-In Registration for the 2013 Developmental Season this evening from 5-7 p.m. at Papa Gino's (1080 Tiogue Ave.). New registrants, ages 4-14, need to bring a copy of birth certificate and exact change or a check made out to CSA. CHS Girls' Track Team Defeats Prout and Narragansett

The Lady Oakers rounded out their dual meet season on Monday.

  The Coventry High School Girls' Track team concluded their dual meet season with a 5-4 record after defeating Prout and Narragansett on Monday, April 29, but losing to South Kingstown.  Katie Cronin led the team again with double wins in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and Reilly Mitchell continued to lead the team in throwing events. Also running well for Coventry was Allison Bellows in the 3K, Jessica Bellows, Courtney Grant, Kayla Dwyer and Kelsie Lopez in the 1500 and 800 meter.  Gianna Rocchio in the 200 and 4x 400 meter relay. Cassie Champagne competed well in the triple jump, wining the event. Amanda Terenzie and Marissa Fascio both represented CHS in the 3K. Great job CHS Girls!
