Attorneys representing the firefighters' union, Local 3372, have submitted a request on its behalf asking the Court to validate the current firefighter contract.
Counsel for the Central Coventry Professional Firefighters' union, Local 3372, submitted to Kent County Superior Court on Thursday a request for Declaratory Relief. The attached document contains the union's request that the Court declare the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), between the firefighters and Central Coventry Fire District as valid and enforceable. The request states that since the Court has jurisdiction to mediate any claims that may be filed by the firefighters in the event that the district breaches the CBA, the court will have to first determine the validity of the contract. "The firefighters submit that it is within the best interest of the estate for the Court to make a determination as to the validity of the CBA …
The Coventry Emergency Operations Center will go by a new name to honor the late Central Coventry Fire District Battalion Chief.
At the start of Monday's Town Council meeting, President Gary Cote presented Tracy Hall, wife of the late Central Coventry Fire Battalion Chief William J. Hall, with a proclamation memorializing Chief Hall's work and accomplishments in the Town of Coventry. In his memory, Town officials have renamed the Coventry Emergency Operations Center, The William J. Hall Emergency Operations Center. The Center, located within the Annex across from Town Hall, serves as the command post for any large-scale emergency events within the Town, such as hurricanes, floods, blizzards, etc. Apart from the many hours he spent at the EOC as a member of the Town's Emergency Management Committee, Chief Hall also instructed two graduating classes of Community …

Police urge residents to lock their cars even if parked in their own driveway.
The Coventry Police Dept. is asking residents for their help in preventing theft from vehicles, which continues to be an ongoing problem for law enforcement statewide. Officer Peter Vieira urges all vehicle owners to lock their cars, even while they are parked in their driveway. According to Off. Vieira, nearly all thieves move on to an easier target if they find a car locked. "Lock all your vehicles when they are unoccupied," reads a community service announcement from CPD. "Securing your vehicles will be a great deterrence from having personal items stolen. The majority of recent thefts from vehicles occurred when the victim left his or her vehicle unlocked while it was unattended." Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity…

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 24 DUI fatalities in Rhode Island in 2012, which were 34 percent of all traffic-related fatalities last year, according to …

April 23, 2013 Insurers use the type of fire protection covering a particular home as one factor in determining whether or not the insurer will agree to insure the home (underwriting) and determine the premium that will be charged to the homeowner (rating). The Rhode Island appointed advisory organization, Insurance Services Office (ISO), publishes Public Protection Classifications (PPC) that insurers may use to underwrite and rate homeowners insurance. Insurers are free to use other classifications, however, we believe that the use of ISO PPC classifications is common for most insurers writing in Rhode Island. Insurers will set different standards for what PPC classifications they are willing to write and the effect on rates. Therefore…
