This Weekend: Elks Soccer Shoot, Bike Runs and More

Here are just a handful of ideas to kickstart your weekend planning.

Tour a Historical Coventry Landmark! Did you know that Spring 2013 marked the Nathanael Greene Homestead's 89th season as a museum? Take a tour at 50 Taft Street in Coventry to learn all about Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene who lived in the home, known as Spell Hall, from 1770 to 1776. Tours are given Fridays, Saturdays (and Mondays too!) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, from 1-5 p.m. Click here to visit the Homestead's Facebook page for more information.

Elks Soccer Shoot 2013: From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, the Coventry-West Greenwich Elks Lodge will host this year's Soccer Shoot at the Fish Hill Soccer Complex in Coventry. Everyone is welcome to shoot and there is no fee! The winner of each age group will compete in the Elks State Shoot, and a winner from there may go on to to Regional Shoot in Massachusetts. Twisted Puzzle Run: Beginning at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 7, cruise the Ocean State on a motorcycle or in a classic car to find pieces of the puzzle! Participants will have at least a dozen puzzle piece stops along the route, including three in Coventry and one in Greene. The event ends with a barbecue at Twisted Throttle, 570 Nooseneck Hill Road, Exeter. $15 per driver; $10 per passenger; $10 per person (barbecue only). Click here for complete Puzzle Run rules. Weekend Fun at CPL: On Saturday mornings, the Coventry Public Library hosts Drop-In Crafts to Make & Take where children of all ages can create a fun craft project to take him. Also offered on Saturday mornings is Drop-In Games, during which kids of any change can play board games with friends. No registration required.

KC Cats Free Class: Is your child considering cheerleading as an after school sport? If so, the KC Cats All-Star Cheerleading squad is offering a free introductory class for ages 5 and up from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1010 Tiogue Ave. visit www.kccatsallstars.com for more information.

Waste For Warmth: For the third consecutive year, the Artic Mission of West Warwick will host an electronic waste and paper shredding event to raise funds for its heating assistance program and Stepping Stones Centers. This year's event will take place this Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cardi's Furniture, located at 1681 Quaker Lane, West Warwick. Click here for complete details.

PYO Berries: From 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at Alpacas of Harkney Hill (1394 Harkney Hill Rd.), customers can "Pick Your Own" low and high-growing wild blueberries and huckleberries to purchase. Informational alpaca demonstrations are also offered at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes! For more information, call 397-4761.

Memorial Bike Run: The 4th Annual Memorial Bike Run in memory of Michael "Moogie" Potvin will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8, beginning at the Coventry Men's Club on Phillips Hill Road. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., kickstands up at 11:30 a.m. A pig roast and raffles will be held after the run, starting at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the Men's Club.

Dave Jones Scholarship Steak Fry/Car Show: This Sunday at Mishnock Grove, the Coventry-West Greenwich Lions will hold their 17th Annual Dave Jones Scholarship Steak Fry/Mishnock Reunion & Car Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gates open at 9 a.m. Live music will be provided by Dottie Zack and The Outlaws. Tickets are $15 per adult, $5/child (cost with a burger), children under age 6 are guests. For tickets, call Ray at 821-7219 or Pete at 821-1771.
