This Weekend: CHS Homecoming, 'Shocktober' at Paine House and More

Here are just a handful of ideas to kickstart your weekend planning.

Tour a Historical Coventry Landmark! Did you know that Spring 2013 marked the Nathanael Greene Homestead's 89th season as a museum? Take a tour at 50 Taft Street in Coventry to learn all about Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene who lived in the home, known as Spell Hall, from 1770 to 1776. Tours are given Fridays, Saturdays (and Mondays too!) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, from 1-5 p.m. Click here to visit the Homestead's Facebook page for more information.

CHS Homecoming: Coventry High School will celebrate Homecoming 2013 this weekend, Oct. 25 and 26, beginning with an away football game against Mount Hope High School Friday at 7 p.m. Homecoming King and Queen nominees will be introduced during halftime. At 10:45 a.m. Saturday, the school's Homecoming Parade will kick off from Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School and end at CHS. Weekend Fun at CPL: On Saturday mornings, the Coventry Public Library hosts Drop-In Crafts to Make & Take where children of all ages can create a fun craft project to take him. Also offered on Saturday mornings is Drop-In Games, during which kids of any change can play board games with friends. No registration required.

Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade: From noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, the Coventry Dog Park Association will host the First Annual Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume Contest and Parade at park's future home behind the Town Hall Annex on Flat River Road. (Rain date Sunday, Oct. 27) The event will feature prizes, raffles, a bake sale, refreshments, face painting, entertainment and homemade dog treats, in addition to information about the future park! Canine costume contest categories are cutest, scariest, most original and best overall. A $5 minimum donation is requested as an entrance fee to benefit the future dog park. 'Shocktober' at Paine House: Register today! At 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, members of the Western RI Historical Society invite the public to experience a Shocktober event with spirits of Paine! (Paine House Museum of course, located at 7 Station Street.) Special guests include Andrea Perron, author of House of Darkness House of Light; Chris Rodina, author of Vampires of New England and Ghosts Ships of New England. $20 admission fee includes ghost tours of Paine House and the Pine Grove Cemetery by RISEUP, local ghost stories, folklore and refreshments. P&R Halloween Party: The Coventry Parks & Recreation Department will host a free Halloween Party this Saturday at 6 p.m. in the upstairs hall of the Community Center. The event is for children ages 3-10 years old and will feature trick-or-treating, a flashlight egg hunt (must bring own flashlight), along with music, games, crafts, snacks and a costume contest.

PYO Berries: From 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at Alpacas of Harkney Hill (1394 Harkney Hill Rd.), customers can "Pick Your Own" low and high-growing wild blueberries and huckleberries to purchase. Informational alpaca demonstrations are also offered at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes! For more information, call 397-4761.

Greene Harvest Market: On Sunday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Greene Public Library Association will hold its Annual Fall Harvest Market at 179 Hopkins Hollow Road in Greene. There will be cranberries, cheese, baked goods and other farmers' market items available for purchase.
