Coventry CERT Team to Host Comedy Night Fundraiser Saturday

Coventry CERT will receive 100% of ticket sales profits for Saturday's Comedy Zone event at the Showcase Cinemas on Quaker Lane.

Coventry's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will host a Comedy Night fundraiser at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. at Showcase Cinemas (1200 Quaker Ln.)

The 18+ event is part of Showcase's Comedy Zone program, which offers local organizations the opportunity sell tickets to its Saturday night comedy shows for $10.

Coventry CERT will receive 100% of the proceeds for all tickets sold, which will be used to purchase supplies for the all-volunteer group of Coventry residents. In the event of a fundraiser like this one, Showcase Cinemas benefits only from profits made through food and beverage purchases.

For tickets, contact CCFD Batallion Chief and CERT instructor Jim Cady at jimccfd74@verizon.net.

Entertainers scheduled for Saturday's Comedy Zone are:

J Jay Boyd - "With power, energy, voices and yes even words, J. Jay Boyd has been described as a hilarious, one man sitcom. Everything J. Jay does and experiences has instant potential to become part of his act, and he is the tour guide of the whacky world he perceives he lives in.  An incredibly talented and entertaining comedian, J.Jay Boyd puts on a show that will guarantee laughs from everyone!" - Showcase Cinemas Comedy Zone

Keith Lenart – "Keith Lenart is a comedy veteran with years of experience handling a wide variety of audiences, and he's certain to elicit laughs from even the most conservative crowd. His fast-paced delivery and jokes about an array of popular subjects hold audiences' attention from beginning to end." - Showcase Cinemas Comedy Zone

Coventry CERT is an organized group of volunteers from the community that have been trained to safely respond to disaster situations and to support and work with emergency personnel in efforts to respond to community needs during these situations. The team does not currently have an operating budget, which is needed to support ongoing trainings, recruitment advertisements, supplies and day-to-day expenses, making fundraising events such as this one all the more important.

The team has been activated several times in response to storm-related emergencies and has assisted in water distribution, checking on citizens with mobility and health problems and assisting in community shelter operations. In addition, members have had strong involvement in the Home Depot Safety Day program and have organized several food and grocery gift card collections to benefit the Rhode Island Pink Heals organization, who distributes the gift cards and canned goods to local families affected by cancer. Coventry CERT has also participated in cemetery clean-ups and clearing brush at the Nathaniel Greene Homestead.

For those interested in getting involved with CERT, consider attending a monthly meeting held every second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Coventry Town Hall Annex building at 1675 Flat River Road.
