The Urban Archeologist: What's in that Tin?

Can you spot the Massachusetts artifact?

Here’s a quick tip to finding tag sale gold...look for nothing.  

It sounds trite, but if you are just starting out as a picker and don’t collect anything specific, then be sure to widen your view.


Widen my what!?


Remember, At these sales you are in a strange location and your sub-conscious may offer you only some form of tunnel vision - focusing only forward to ward off attacks.


Hack the primitive part of your brain’s code by first acclimating yourself to the sale, take a quick walk around to familiarize yourself with every corner of the house. Now, review and return to the rooms where you think there might be something that piqued your curiosity, or revisit the whole house all over again. You should start to notice that your field of view has expanded.


Remember, this tunnel vision thing can also happen when you sense a really good sale, or as I like to call it a true “dig.” Your excitement level peaks and the blood starts pumping and your brain is suddenly overloaded. A good way to relax is to find someone running the sale and strike up a conversation and ask, “Is the sale through the whole house, or just the main floor?”


My journey this weekend was just such a sale. I spent over 2 hours there and it took that long to really see and pile up everything I wanted.
