Langevin Recognizes CHS Senior for History Project

Student Makes Presentation on Capitol Hill at National Endowment for the Humanities Event

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) recently congratulated Senior Amanda Hoskins on receiving national recognition for a project to commemorate Rhode Islanders who lost their lives in the invasion of Normandy. Hoskins was chosen to speak at a briefing hosted by National History Day (NHD) Thursday in celebration of their winning the 2011 National Humanities Medal for their programs from the National Endowment for the Humanities. After giving a presentation on her project, Hoskins met with Langevin in his Washington office where they discussed her work and her passion for history.

“Amanda’s inspiring effort to remember two Rhode Island heroes deserves to be commended,” said Langevin. “I am proud to know that she represented Coventry and all of Rhode Island today with her wonderful work. It was a pleasure meeting her to discuss her incredible experience in Normandy, and I look forward to hearing about the great accomplishments she is sure to have as she moves on to Quinnipiac University and beyond.”

Hoskins , where she paid tribute to Michael Macera of Johnston and Henry S. Golas of Central Falls, both of whom died in the pivotal World War II battle that occurred there on June 6, 1944. She and CHS teacher Lisa Johansen joined 14 other student/teacher pairs from across the country on the trip as part of their participation in National History Day’s Albert H. Small Student and Teacher Institute program, which engages high schoolers in rigorous research and study, including a seminar in Washington and the trip overseas. Before crossing the Atlantic, she had done research on the service members using resources in Rhode Island and at the National Archives in Washington with the assistance of Mike Kern at George Washington University.
