Convery Steps Down As School Superintendent

Dr. Michael Almeida will be filling the position.

At Thursday night's School Committee meeting, committee members accepted the resignation of Coventry School Superintendent Michael Convery. Convery was appointed to the position in 2010 after serving as Assistant Superintendent and before that Principal of Coventry Middle School. Although he is stepping down from his position, he is not leaving the district. He will once again become Assistant Superintendent, a position he was appointed to on Thursday night.

In an email to school employees last week, Convery cited personal reasons and district needs as the reasons for his change in position.

"After reflecting at length on the needs of the District and where I am in my personal life, I have decided to step down as Superintendent and return to my previous role as Assistant Superintendent," wrote Convery. "This was not an easy decision to make , but it is the right one for the District and me."

Taking over as superintendent will be Dr. Michael Almeida, who was recently appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent of the district on July 19, along with Mrs. Lee Rabbitt. Dr. Almeida has worked within the Coventry School District for five years, and until this past summer he served as the Principal of Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School.

Now we know why they hired 2 assistants sveral weeks ago. On the serious side I thought Dr Almeida did a decent job at the middle school despite his personal life issues that were so hottly discussed in the comments on the article about him being hired as an assistant superintendant

The district will still have two Asst. Superintendents as Mike Convery has been appointed to that position along with Lee Rabbitt.

Coventry Voter #2 Convery made a big mess. Played favorites among staff. Moral is terrible. Administrators should not bully their staff.....Administrators are trying to figure out what they are doing. :( Parents cannot get thru the staff when they try to call Asst Supt. or any dept. .. Very frustrating. As a parent I have to have faith that the new Supt. will be successful. Very Scary situation that could cost the district losing a lot of money. Disagree with bringing staff from outside. They have no commitment to the district. The police need to handle bullying off school grounds. Teachers an staff are there to teach education.

Voter, That is such an ignorant post that I hesitate in even responding and against my better judgement, I do. Mike Convery was not the right person for the job, never was. But to denigrate Mike Almeida without further details is reckless. I have empathy for your daughter being bullied, but did it happen off schools grounds? If so, the school department and principal **please note the spelling** do not have jurisdiction to discipline a student for that. That is an example where FAR too many parents disregard their duty to be a parent and try to pass that responsibility off to the school department. Actions and reactions of a child begin and end at home 95% of the time. I hope that you embrace that idea rather than pass the buck to the school department. Your child will be better off for it.

The new superintendant is just part of the good ole boy network. The administration in coventry seem to be more passionate about getting their freinds and family jobs than the do the well being of the students of the school systems. Look at the high school for example, Hallways are blocked off because the tiles are falling out of the roofs because of the rain, Instead of spending on nice new furniture for the admins, Why not spend it to properly fix the roof, Heres and idea, Why not follow the example of other districs an put the admins in the schools like other, succesful districs do. Coventry should really be ashamed of themselfs when it comes to how they put themselfs on a pedistool.

There's no denying that a culture exists of favors and hiring people because of who they know- but show me a district that it doesn't exist in. However, Mike Almeida is not part of that Coventry "good ol' boys network" that you speak of. He was an outsider. He served on the school committee in Warwick, and was assistant principal and then principal in East Providence before coming to Coventry. The hiring committee did a fantastic job getting him in Coventry. Nobody can please everyone and he is a leader who sticks to his guns and at times alienates people who disagree with him because he is not a panderer.

Please stop frothing at the mouth, Your hatred for Almeida is apparent to all. Go see a shrink !

Mike Almeida's personal life should have no place in this conversation. I've been around this town for a long time and there are SO many good natured and very intelligent people, but for every 100 of those people there is one ignorant squeaky wheel who can't bother to use correct grammar or at the very least spell check. And unfortunately, the ignorant squeaky wheel is the one whose voice is heard. Let's end this conversation and judge Dr. Almeida on his professional merits and track record for the children of Coventry.

I've been in public service on and off for a long time (retired military). There is, for the lack of a better word, a" clause" in your work statement about ethics etc. I do not, in total, agree with the Coventry and lower case coventry voters' statements but they are not that far off mark. Speak Out is absolutely wrong in the first sentence "keep the personal life out". That is a bad blanket statement to make because if you had someone that in his or her personal life was a prescription drug addict, sex/porn addict, or someone who puts on a dress and lipstick to catch butterflies as a man...would that be ok too because, hey, it's their personal life. Now if all of us have a squeaky, sanitized life it would be different, however, none of us do. I get it that it's wrong and he's not the best role model nor should have been chosen as the Super...but to be an alarmist and use any amount of time and effort to harp on it is an odd behavior in itself.

The behaviors that you describe and put in the same category would effect someone's job performance and therefore should be in the conversation about someone's capacity to hold that position. From my perspective, any indiscretions in this instance do not have any impact on Almeida's capacity to be an educational leader for the district.

Speak Although inappropriate, non of those are illegal, and yet, in this instance, neither was what he did. You can't have two bites of the apple..it's either "private life alone" or what you do matters..not pick and choose your poisons. I don't believe there's a tailored list of ethics violations. Not being familiar with the whole circumstance of the back story, I'm assuming the female was not also an employee. If that were the case an absolute firing would be in order for both.
Leave RI September 24, 2012 at 05:36 PM
lower case cv..I agree..even if she wasn't an employee it's wrong. So now that she is or was and again either or both were married it is a question of what their respective employee handbooks and policies are that address this. I'm not wasting my time researching the city handbook or rules but I will bet dimes to donuts that this is a clear violation. Fire both.

Please stay on topic and refrain from using unnecessary terminology or the comment thread will be closed. This purpose of this article was to inform that public of an administrative change.

While i may not be the most grammaticaly correct person, or have the very best spelling, Thank you to the grammer police for pointing that out an avoiding the issues, I do however have the inside track on what goes onin the school system. Neither were fired, Actually it was swept under the carpet so it wouldnt have to be dealt with, She was awarded a pricipalship at an elemntary school to move her away from him. And yes i am not the biggest supporter of almeida nor was i of convery. Like i have stated before, The only way the children are going to come first is to go outside the district and bring in some fresh blood, Someone who isnt use to the business as usual. Remeber two years ago when the roofs were collapsing all around the state, One super from another district tried to get something done about it, The local super and the asst. Director of physical plant were making jokes stating just give the kids hard hats. And that the super in the other distrct doesnt know how business is done around here. My point being coventry needs a change. Someone from the outside, Even a school commitee that isnt puppets would be nice as well.
coventry voter-Jay September 24, 2012 at 06:46 PM
We get what we deserve in Coventry. Keep electing from the bunch and these type of decisions will keep being made. Spell check police should read some of the emails and letters that come from the school. My son thinks we should grade them and send them back. The System is broke in Coventry. Its nearly time to pick up and move away. Hate to say that but its reality

We will have to agree to disagree. I believe Dr. Almeida is an educational leader who will steer Coventry in the right direction.

Assistant Superintendents, Assistant Principals, Teachers Aides, Classroom Aides, yard aides, gym aides, highest paid techers..... how many six figure positions in the Coventry School system???? and the result = HS school in jeopardy of losing it's accredidation!!!
