Convery Steps Down As School Superintendent

Dr. Michael Almeida will be filling the position.

At Thursday night's School Committee meeting, committee members accepted the resignation of Coventry School Superintendent Michael Convery. Convery was appointed to the position in 2010 after serving as Assistant Superintendent and before that Principal of Coventry Middle School. Although he is stepping down from his position, he is not leaving the district. He will once again become Assistant Superintendent, a position he was appointed to on Thursday night.

In an email to school employees last week, Convery cited personal reasons and district needs as the reasons for his change in position.

"After reflecting at length on the needs of the District and where I am in my personal life, I have decided to step down as Superintendent and return to my previous role as Assistant Superintendent," wrote Convery. "This was not an easy decision to make , but it is the right one for the District and me."

Taking over as superintendent will be Dr. Michael Almeida, who was recently appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent of the district on July 19, along with Mrs. Lee Rabbitt. Dr. Almeida has worked within the Coventry School District for five years, and until this past summer he served as the Principal of Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School.
