Otter Hunting in RI? Bill Would Permit It

The practice has been banned for decades.

State lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would legalize otter hunting.

The practice has been banned for decades in Rhode Island, according to the Providence Journal.

State Rep. Michael Chippendale, R-Foster, recently introduced a bill that would legalize otter hunting. A House committee this week held the bill for further review. Chippendale is senior deputy minority leader.

Proponents of the measure say the otter population is on the rise and claim the animals damage ponds, while the group Defenders of Animals opposes the legislation, according to the Journal.
