Bill Would Greenlight Digital Insurance ID for Motorists
Many major insurance companies now offer digital insurance cards through mobile apps.
Rhode Island lawmakers this week will consider a bill that would allow motorists to use smartphones to present proof of insurance.
The measure will be reviewed by the House Judiciary Committee, according to the Associated Press. It would allow motorists to use smartphones or tablets to show their insurance policies to police officers during traffic stops.
Many major insurance companies offer digital insurance cards through mobile apps. Geico has been promoting its version with a television spot.
"Paper ID cards always seem to be out of date when you need it and are easily damaged in your wallet or car's glove box," said Peter Meoli, Geico's director of mobile development, in a statement. "Geico customers can access proof of their auto policy on their smartphones at any time of the day or night."
Thirty states currently allow motorists to present digital insurance ID, according to the AP.
