The fowl issue has gained attention recently in Woonsocket, where the City Council on Monday was scheduled to review a proposal that would allow backyard chickens in the city. Woonsocket's council last year defeated a similar proposal.

Along with Coventry, the following communities allow backyard chickens, according to ABC 6:

  • Providence
  • Newport
  • Warwick
  • Newport
  • Johnston
  • Barrington
Three years ago, Providence became one of the first urban communities in the state to allow backyard chickens. In 2012, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung vetoed a measure that would have allowed backyard chickens in that city.

Proponents say backyard chickens provide healthier eggs and can be a good teaching tool for children. Critics cite noise, the stench, and concerns they attract rodents.

Coventry's chicken ordinance can be found here.
