UPDATE: Two Arrested After West Warwick Stand-off

Police and SWAT team members were dispatched to the scene where a 19-year-old Coventry resident was later arrested.

 

UPDATE (August 13, 11:14 a.m.):

State Police have identified one of the men arrested in Sunday night's police stand-off at 70 Shippee Ave., West Warwick as Edward J. Lepore, 19, of 120 Colvintown Rd., Coventry.

Lepore was charged with 1.) First Degree Armed Robbery, 2.) Conspiracy and 3.) Affidavit Arrest Warrant for Domestic Assault out of the Coventry Police Department.

A report from the RI State Police stated that as troopers responded to the residence in an attempt to locate Lepore who was wanted by the Coventry Police Department for Domestic Assault, they encountered a male party running away from the residence and entering a vehicle.

Troopers stopped the vehicle and learned the male party had been robbed by two male subjects with a weapon inside the residence. The subjects later agreed to surrender themselves to members of the State Police Tactical Team after lengthy negotiations. Lepore was transported to the Wickford Barracks where he was processed and held pending morning arraignment. Lepore was later arraigned at the barracks and held at the Adult Correctional Institute-Men's Intake as a probation violator.

The juvenile suspect has not been identified.

Aug. 13 - 6:47 a.m.:  assisted West Warwick and State Police departments as well as SWAT team members during a stand-off that began on Sunday night and lasted more than five hours.

The incident occurred at a home near the intersection of Shippee Avenue and Pond Street in West Warwick. Witnesses say that the scene began to unfold around 7 p.m. Residents from several nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.

According to State Police, a male wanted for domestic assault was allegedly in possession of a gun inside the home with a second juvenile suspect, a woman and a two-month-old baby.

After several hours of negotiating, the woman and the baby exited the residence shortly after midnight. Authorities say they were not held against their will.

Police negotiators persuaded the man and juvenile suspect to exit the house a short time later, where they were arrested on charges currently unknown.
