Father, Son Allegedly Steal Handguns, $25K in Jewelry

The following is based on reports from the Portsmouth Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A father and son were arrested recently after allegedly stealing handguns and $25,000 worth of jewelry from a Portsmouth residence.

David Welch, 41, of Bristol, and his son, Justin Welch, of Middletown, are both being charged with breaking and entering, and larceny.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred on Dec. 26 on Mitchell's Lane. Portsmouth police say thieves broke into the home and stole jewelry and firearms. More than $25,000 in jewelry was reportedly stolen from the residence.

An investigation led to the father and son, according to police. A search of the father's home resulted in detectives finding several of the missing weapons and jewelry.

Portsmouth police issued arrest warrants for both men. Bristol police arrested David Welch on Thursday at his home. His son, Justin Welch, turned himself in at the courthouse on Thursday.

As you will note, I did not reference his son at all but rather commented on Dave and his years of being a problem for society. You're right, I don't know the family, and don't care to either with him as head of the household.......I wish them luck, and for our community, hope they learn right from wrong despite their father's social ineptitude, and become productive members of our Island. I do know what has been reported, and that the police obviously had probable cause for the issuance of a warrant and arrest of both. Whether that leads to conviction, we will all have to wait and see. As a father, I feel for the children, but maybe Dave, and their amazing mother, should have been more concerned with how he lives his life and how that will effect his children in the future, and how they will eventually read his name in the newspaper through no one's fault but his own if he didn't change his ways. I don't rely on others for how my children perceive me. I lead by example. It's all about responsibility and accountability for ones actions. One thing I know for sure, is I'm not responsible for how they view their father. That's the problem today, everyone points the finger away from themselves. I know, I know, it's the world and the media that's wrong and not them.

I've known David long enough and one fact is being left out here,David Welch is a heroin addict. You bet those guns would of ended back on the streets of Fall River or New Bedford probably for nothing more than a few nickel bags.David is a loser and always has been. I don't know Justin and I can not make any judgement positive or negative about him.
