Coventry Fire District Considers Six Layoffs Due to 'Budgetary Issues'
A special meeting has been scheduled for Sunday morning to discuss the issue and try to avoid the cuts.
Six firefighters from the , may soon be receiving layoff notices as a result of financial concerns within the current spending plan. If delivered, the layoffs will be effective as early as Jan. 1.
According to Chief Paul Labbadia, the District's budget is currently being scrutinized before any final decisions are made.

"Right now it is up in the air," he said on Thursday morning. "There have been no notices given out, but they are typed up."

Coventry Professional Firefighters Union President David Gorman explained that a special meeting has been scheduled for Sunday morning to discuss the issue and ideally bring executive board members and union members to an agreement that would avoid the layoffs.
"We were close to an agreement before this issue came up and we still are," Gorman said. "We're confident that we can come to an agreement and get this settled on Sunday."
