Central Coventry Fire District Closure Looms

The judge ordered the district to shut down by May 16.

Officials are scrambling to deal with the looming closure of the Central Coventry Fire District.

Last month, a judge ordered the liquidation of the fire district after it went bankrupt. The order mandates that the district close by May 16. That means 44 firefighters and four administrators will lose their jobs.

The Central Coventry Fire District is the largest of the town's four fire districts.

On Tuesday, officials held a meeting to determine how to move forward, according to WPRI-TV.

Ideas discussed included establishing a volunteer fire department, WPRI reported. Other options previously talked about include having the three other fire districts absorb the Central Coventry area.
