The Nest Protect: One Cool Smoke Detector

Attorney Mike Bottaro reviews a new fire safety device that may reduce home fire fatalities.

Did you know that almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the US occurred where there was no operating smoke detector?

Let’s face it – smoke detectors can be annoying. I have been awakened in the night to the jarring screech from our detector indicating that we had a low battery.  Not very user friendly.  And it is an inconvenience to have to rush to change batteries upon learning that the battery has already expired.

Recently, a new product, the Nest Protect was introduced to the US market.  Unlike other smoke detectors, the Nest Protect uses color, voice command, and a sync to your smart phone to make sure that you know that it is operating safely and to know when the battery is getting low before it becomes expired.

I have no connection to this company, but I do intend to check it out. We just don’t have time to worry about batteries dying after the fact amidst working, parenting, and paying the bills.

From the reviews, this looks to be an innovative safety product that can help prevent personal injuries and fatalities from home fires.  For example, if the detector is pulsing a yellow color, the battery will need to be replaced soon. Nest Protect also uses a human voice to tell you what’s wrong, where the problem is, and what to do, and will send you updates to your phone.

The company’s marketing pitch is that “Safety shouldn’t be annoying.” Thinking back on those awful pitches coming from my ceiling, I couldn’t agree more with Nest. My children should not need to be awakened at night because I burnt the popcorn.
