CCFD Gains Seven New Board Members
The 12-hour voting period brought nearly 1,400 taxpayers to the polls to select a new Board of Directors for the financially distressed fire district.
1,391 taxpayers of the Central Coventry Fire District cast their ballots during Saturday's all-day referendum at Coventry Town Hall, electing seven new members to the CCFD Board of Directors.
When the polls closed at 8 p.m., the candidates waited quietly for Special Master Richard Land to announce the vote counts provided by members of the Coventry Board of Canvassers who oversaw the election.
The six candidates endorsed by the Central Coventry Citizens Taskforce for Fire Protection swept the election, with nearly all of them receiving 900 votes or more. Rounding out the Board was Maureen Jendzejec, who will be sworn in with her fellow victors at an upcoming ceremony.
The final poll tallies were reported as follows:
Raymond J. Angell III - 315
Marie A. Baker - 996

Special Master Land admitted that he was pleased with the voter turnout and is looking forward to working with the newly-elected Board of Directors to help get the foundering fire district back on steady financial footing.
"I'm pleased with the turnout of people at the polls today. It shows that they really are interested and concerned about what happens going forward," he said. "I know that these people will really take their job as board members seriously and that they are ready to get to work. Now it's time for them to sit down and begin formulating a plan of action and working towards putting a budget together."
A status hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2 in Courtroom 11 of Providence County Superior Court (250 Benefit St., Providence), during which Judge Brian Stern will verify the election results as part of the district's ongoing legal process.
