Flash Flood Watch in Coventry Today

Residents are urged to monitor weather forecasts today as rain showers and thunderstorms will bring an increased risk of flash flooding in the area.

A flash flood warning is in effect through 8 p.m. today in Coventry, as heavy rains are expected.

Rain showers are predicted for this afternoon with thunderstorms beginning around 3 p.m., according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service station in Taunton, MA.

As the warm front that brought staggering heat to Rhode Island shore last week continues to move north, temperatures at least are dropping, but NWS warns additional showers will hit the region this afternoon.

"These showers and thunderstorms could bring torrential rainfall, increasing the flash flood threat for the region," the advisory said.

Rainfall rates in during the heaviest storms could exceed two inches per hour - posing a danger for localized flash flooding on roads. Small creeks and streams will be at risk of spilling over their banks and urban areas could flood temporarily.

The threat for flash flooding in Coventry will wane by early this evening, according to weather forecasters. The NWS urges residents to monitor forecasts throughout the day today and to be prepared to take action should flash flooding occur.
