Five Things You Need To Know Today, October 8

Today is Monday, Oct. 8. Here are five things you need to know:

Columbus Day: Coventry students have no school today, there will be no trash pickup and town offices will be closed in observance of Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of October. The holiday remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492.

CBA Legends: The Coventry Basketball Association is running an 18+ Co-ed basketball league, the CBA Legends. Signups and drafts will be held this evening at Olde Theater Diner from 8-10 p.m. E-mail simma@aol.com or call 385-9142 if you have questions.

Greene Homestead Tours: The historic 1770 homestead of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene (50 Taft St., Coventry) is now open for tours. Today's visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5/adult, $3 child. Visit www.nathanelgreenehomestead.org for more info.

Political Profiles: Are you a political candidate in the upcoming election? Coventry Patch is would like to publish profiles on local candidates. Click here to fill out a quick survey or contact Editor Lauren Costa at lauren.costa@patch.com to get started.

Plan Ahead: We here at Patch will soon be announcing a Halloween Costume Photo Contest across Rhode Island. Do your kids have their costumes yet? Start thinking about submitting a photo to enter! The contest starts on Oct. 15 so keep an eye out!
