Five Things, July 1: Vacation Time, Fireworks Donations and More

Today is Monday, July 1, 2013 and here are five things you should know about.

Editor on Vacation: The Financial Town Meeting is over, school is out, and the CCFD board election is behind us - which means that it's about time for me to hide my laptop and take some much-needed vacation time. I will be away from Patchlandia starting today and will return on Tuesday, July 9. Meanwhile, please contact Field Editor Erin Tiernan who will be taking the reins this week at erin.tiernan@patch.com.

Free Computer Lessons: Have you been considering taking a course to get you up to speed with the basics in today's digital age? Now is the time to take advantage of Coventry Public Library's Free Computer Lessons for Beginniners! Lessons are offered in basic computer skills, searching the internet, making Excel spreadsheets, creating Word documents, and even navigating Facebook. Space is limited. For more information and to schedule a lesson, contact the library at 822-9100 or send an email to askreference@coventrylibrary.org.

CCFD Election Hearing: Tomorrow, July 2, at 9:30 a.m., there will be a Status Hearing regarding the results of Saturday's Central Coventry Fire District Board of Directors election. The hearing will be held in Courtroom 11 of Providence County Superior Court, located at 250 Benefit Street in Providence.

Fireworks Donations: Coventry's Annual Johnson's Pond 4th of July Fireworks Display is only days away, but members of the Johnson's Pond Civic Association who put on the beloved spectacle still need your help! Due to the combination of rising costs and declining contributions, the display has been reduced to some extent for the past two years and is in jeopardy of repeating the trend. If you would like to make a donation to keep the tradition alive, visit www.jpca.myevent.com to donate online or send a check with "Fireworks Contribution" in the memo line to: JPCA, P.O. Box 123, Coventry, RI, 02816. Every little bit helps!

CPL Summer Reading: Registration is now open for Coventry Public Library's Summer Reading Program, "Dig Into Reading". Children entering grades 1-5 may register online at www.coventrylibrary.org or in person. CPL librarians will track summer reading progress, offer crafts and hold special performances and events throughout the summer. Call 822-9102 for more information.
