Coventry Relay for Life Moving Inside Due to Forecasted Heavy Rainfall

The event which benefits the American Cancer Society will now be held in the Coventry High School gymnasium.

Coventry's 6th Annual Relay For Life, scheduled to take place at the Coventry High School track and football field from 4 p.m. on Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, will officially be moving indoors to the school gym, due to a chance of heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Andrea.

The current forecast shows Andrea hitting the area from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. Southern New England, including RI, could get up to three inches of rain out of Andrea.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rainfall is expected in and around Coventry Friday afternoon before tapering off to showers in the early morning hours of Saturday. Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 3 inches are expected, with some areas receiving up to 4 inches.

Gretta Jacobs from the American Cancer Society, has asked that participants not arrive at CHS any earlier than 5 p.m. It should also be noted that tents are not allowed inside the gym, but Relayers should still plan to bring a sleeping bag and pillow if they plan to stay overnight. Tables and chairs are welcome, but must have plastic bumpers on leg bottoms or be placed on a carpet to avoid damaging the gymnasium floor. Fundraising and entertainment will go on as usual.
