Victory Day Closings in Coventry

The holiday only recognized in the Ocean State makes for many office and bank closings on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013.

Don't forget that Rhode Island state and municipal offices are closed today, Aug. 12, 2013 in observance of Victory Day.

The Coventry Town Hall, Library, Annex, Animal Control and other municipal offices are all closed today. Police and fire tax and records offices will also be closed.

As the Department of Public Works also observes the holiday, trash and recycling pickup will be delayed by one day this week as well.

Federal offices are open and mail delivery will continue to operate as normal.

Rhode Island is the only state in the U.S. that continues to observe Victory Day, which marks the end of World War II. The holiday, established in 1946 by President Harry Truman, is commonly known as "Victory over Japan Day" or "VJ Day".

Some critics say Victory Day should no longer be recognized as a holiday, because the U.S. is now allied with Japan.
