Superior Court will assign various powers and responsibilities to newly-elected members of the Central Coventry Fire District Board of Directors.
In Providence Superior Court last Friday, Central Coventry Fire District (CCFD) Special Master Richard Land, went before Judge Brian Stern to request that the court authorize him to conduct a special election for new members of the district's currently vacant board of directors. "Due to the delicate nature of the District's current operations, the Special Master believes that holding an election to fill vacancies on the Board should be held as soon as possible," said Land in his petition to the court. Despite agreeing that a new Board should in fact be elected, Land, along with counsel for the Town of Coventry and firefighters' union, state representatives and several taxpayers voiced their concern about a number of election-related …
Eva-Marie Mancuso, the state’s new Board of Education chair, uses courtroom demeanor to try to convince angry teachers and nervous parents that change is necessary.
Eva-Marie Mancuso enjoys a lively debate but is clear about one thing: When it comes to educating Rhode Island’s children, the status quo is not an option. At a recent Q&A session in East Greenwich, the state’s new Board of Education chair, sparred with state Sen. James Sheehan (D-NK, Narr.) over teacher evaluations, cajoled teachers to work with the state, and tried to reassure at least one parent that using passage of a test as a graduation requirement is the right move. The forum, organized by the EG Democratic Town Committee, was held at EG’s Town Hall, the former Kent County Courthouse. The setting suited Mancuso, a personal injury lawyer. Although the new Board of Education for the first time combines all levels of public education …
Limitations and guidelines regarding the operating hours of local asphalt and cement plants were added to Chapter 153 of the Town's Code of Ordinances.
During the May 13 meeting of the Coventry Town Council, members approved and adopted councilman Ted Jendzejec's amendments to Chapter 153 of the Coventry Code of Ordinances entitled "Licensed Businesses". Jendzejec began considering the revisions after being approached by a number of his Dist. 5 constituents residing in Wood Estates and Westwood Estates, who for nearly a year, have been voicing their discontent in regards to excessive noise, traffic and contamination allegedly originating from several nearby asphalt plants. The amendment added a fourth section to the chapter as follows: SECTION 1. Chapter 153 of the Code of Ordinances of the Town of Coventry entitled "Licensed Businesses" is hereby amended by adding the following: "§ …

Attorneys representing the firefighters' union, Local 3372, have submitted a request on its behalf asking the Court to validate the current firefighter contract.
Counsel for the Central Coventry Professional Firefighters' union, Local 3372, submitted to Kent County Superior Court on Thursday a request for Declaratory Relief. The attached document contains the union's request that the Court declare the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), between the firefighters and Central Coventry Fire District as valid and enforceable. The request states that since the Court has jurisdiction to mediate any claims that may be filed by the firefighters in the event that the district breaches the CBA, the court will have to first determine the validity of the contract. "The firefighters submit that it is within the best interest of the estate for the Court to make a determination as to the validity of the CBA …
The Coventry Emergency Operations Center will go by a new name to honor the late Central Coventry Fire District Battalion Chief.
At the start of Monday's Town Council meeting, President Gary Cote presented Tracy Hall, wife of the late Central Coventry Fire Battalion Chief William J. Hall, with a proclamation memorializing Chief Hall's work and accomplishments in the Town of Coventry. In his memory, Town officials have renamed the Coventry Emergency Operations Center, The William J. Hall Emergency Operations Center. During Monday's meeting, the Coventry Town Council voted 3 to 2 in favor of approving Town Manager Tom Hoover's proposed budget for fiscal 2013-14. April 23, 2013 Insurers use the type of fire protection covering a particular home as one factor in determining whether or not the insurer will agree to insure the home (underwriting) and determine the premium that will be charged to the homeowner (rating). The Rhode Island appointed advisory organization, Insurance Services Office (ISO), publishes Public Protection Classifications (PPC) that insurers may use to underwrite and rate homeowners insurance. Insurers are free to use other classifications, however, we believe that the use of ISO PPC classifications is common for most insurers writing in Rhode Island. Insurers will set different standards for what PPC classifications they are willing to write and the effect on rates. Therefore…

Taskforce Broadening Membership, Preparing For Election
COVENTRY – In the wake of a Friday Superior Court hearing most believe heralds elections for a new Board for the imperiled Fire District, the Coventry Citizens Taskforce today scheduled a meeting for tonight, May 14, and launched a renewed effort to expand its membership and get organized for elections. The group recently launched a website at coventrycitizens.com, and is actively using social media such as Facebook and Twitter to get its message out and engage its members. But it hasn’t forgotten the old tools, either, and the group has begun to distribute “Had Enough Of Fire Taxes?” lawn signs throughout Coventry. The eye-catching, red-and-black signs state the high tax issue and encourage residents to login at the Taskforce website. …
