The extent of tumor progression at the time of diagnosis of diagnosis is of critical importance to prognosis and the determination of a plan of treatment. The degree to which cancers have progressed is generally described by clinical staging, with different systems frequently used to describe different kinds of neoplasms. However, the use of multiple staging systems, in which the same aspects of tumor progression are described in different ways, has created unnecessary complications of nomenclature.
