The Coventry Democratic Town Committee is endorsing David Florio to fill the vacancy on the School Committee in District 4. The seat was vacated with the recent passing of Nancy Sprengelmeyer. “David Florio has been an active member in the community for a long time," said Committee Chairman Frank Hyde. David Ritchotte of Coventry, recently announced his candidacy for the vacant District 4 School Committee seat. David has been a Coventry resident for 29 years, spending his first 23 years growing up in the Oak Haven section of Coventry prior to a job transfer out of state. He returned six years ago with his wife and daughter, moving back to the state where he and his wife were raised. Over the last two years, David has held the position of Hopkins Hill Elementary School PTA President. He has worked hard with the PTA to build a solid foundation of family-centric events to support the staff and students. Candidates for a Non-Partisan Special Election to be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 for District 4 School Committee member may declare March 21 and 22 at Coventry Town Hall (1670 Flat River Rd.) in the Board of Canvassers office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. In the event that a primary election is required, it has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 30. The last day of voter registration for the primary will be Sunday, March 31 at the Coventry Police Station (1275 Main St.) between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Those with questions may contact the Coventry Board of Canvassers and Registration at 822-9151. The Dist. 4 seat was held by School Committee Co-chair Nancy Sprengelmeyer until her recent and unexpected passing on March 3.

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.
It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Barack Obama won Rhode Island’s 4 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. The Wall Street Journal along with the Associated Press has called the race in Rhode Island declaring Obama the winner. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Rhode Island. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state.
Many of the 18 polling locations across Coventry are experiencing strong turnout today.

Voter turnout has been strong in Coventry today since polls opened at 7 a.m. and continued at a steady pace throughout the morning and early afternoon. Coventry currently has 24,478 registered voters across its 18 precincts, 22,412 of which are considered active. The three precincts with the highest number of registered voters have been among those reported by residents to have had lines during the early hours. These include Precinct 603 (polling place Club Jogues) with 2,123 registered voters, Precinct 608 (polling place ASFMS) with 2,024 and Precinct 607 (polling place Coventry Community Center) with 1,893 registered voters.
